DALLAS, PA. – The Cortland women's volleyball team claimed the title at the Misericordia University Cougar Clash and extended its winning streak to 12 matches with three-set victories over Valley Forge and Elizabethtown during the final day of the six-team tournament.
Cortland (15-3) defeated Valley Forge, 25-10, 25-6, 25-15, and Elizabethtown, 25-15, 25-15, 25-15, to finish 4-0 at the tournament. Freshman libero
Carly Haegele (Commack) was named tournament MVP after recording team highs of 47 digs and nine aces over 11 sets in Cortland's four matches.
Sixteen players saw the court in the Red Dragons' win over Valley Forge.
Cat Mangogna (Manorville/Eastport-South Manor) led the team with seven kills and just one error in 14 attempts for a .429 attack percentage.
Julia Pugliese (Wantagh),
Olivia Doorley (Pearl River) and
Bridgette Moran (Massapequa Park/St. John the Baptist) each had five kills with just one error and
Maya Owens (Nyack) rang up four kills with no errors in six attempts. Pugliese also posted a team-best eight digs.
Megan McMahon (Ballston Spa) paced Cortland with 15 assists and
Malley Bowen (Tioga/Tioga Central) had 10 assists and a team-high five aces. Emily Chiavetta (Angola/Immaculata Academy) finished with four aces.
Kaitlyn Hess led Valley Forge (2-9) with three kills.
Owens and
Nadia Moore (Durham, NC/Durham School of the Arts) each had eight kills and
Hannah Southcott (Princeton, WV) added seven in the win over Elizabethtown, which finished 3-1 at the tournament and is now 15-2 on the season. Owens had only one error in 21 attempts and Moore committed only two attack errors in 25 attempts.
Kiersten Cote (East Rockaway/Kellenberg Memorial) led Cortland with 13 kills, followed by Haegele and Southcott with 12 each. Moran recorded five blocks, Moore had four and Owens and
Camryn Anderson (Bronx/Cardinal Spellman) finished with three apiece. Haegele and Bowen each served three aces and Bowen led the squade with 15 assists.
Bryanna Miller had 11 kills and Courtney Westman added six kills for the Blue Jays.
Cortland will travel to nationally 24th-ranked Ithaca for a non-league dual match on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
