SOUTH HADLEY, MASS. - Cortland senior
Danielle Bambola (Miller Place) parred the first playoff hole to earn medalist honors at the competitive Mount Holyoke Women's Golf Invitational Saturday and Sunday at The Orchards Golf Club.
Bambola, Cortland's lone competitor as an individual entry, finished first in a field of 90 golfers. The tournament featured nationally top-ranked NYU, third-ranked Williams and 17th-ranked Amherst, along with Middlebury, an "also receiving votes" team in the latest Division III national rankings.
Bambola and Williams' Olivia White finished tied for first with three-over par, two-day scores of 147. Bambola had a 73 Saturday and a 74 Sunday, with two birdies each day, and White had a 75 Saturday and an ever-par 72 Sunday.
The playoff began on the par-4, 370-yard 18th hole. Bambola's drive was in the fairway down the left side, while White's drive went into a hazard area. Bambola hit the green on her second shot and left an approximate 18-foot birdie putt short but sank about a six-footer for par. White went over the green on her official third shot, chipped on and eventually recorded a double bogey.
Bambola won a tournament playoff for the second straight week. Last Sunday she birdied the second playoff hole to win a three-player tiebreaker at the William Smith Invitational.
Rounding out the top five scorers at Mt. Holyoke were Catalin Yturralde of Williams (77-72-149), Holly Davenport of Williams (74-77-151) and Chloe Levins of Middlebury (73-78-151). Williams won the team title with a 599 (306-293), followed by Middlebury (310-312-622) and NYU (313-309-622) in a tie for second.
Cortland and Ithaca will co-host the Cortaca Northeast Invitational next Saturday and Sunday. The first day will be held at the Country Club of Ithaca and the second day at the Cortland Country Club.
(NOTE:Â It was originally reported that White bogeyed the playoff hole, but it was actually a double bogey since she was assessed a penalty stroke after hitting into the hazard area.)
