Cortland Wins Cortaca Northeast Invitational; Bambola Tournament Medalist

Cortland Red Dragons - 2019 Cortaca Northeast Invitational Champion
ITHACA, N.Y. and CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Cortland women's golf team claimed the title at the six-team, two-day Cortaca Northeast Invitational. The tournament was co-hosted by Cortland and Ithaca College, with the first day at the Country Club of Ithaca and the second day at the Cortland Country Club, and was held in place of Cortland's previously hosted Martin Memorial (2001-08) and Martin/Wallace Invitational (2009-18).

Cortland, which also won the team title at last fall's Martin/Wallace Invitational, finished with a two-day score of 653, nine strokes ahead of runner-up Ithaca. The Red Dragons carded a score of 326 in Ithaca Saturday and a 327 in Cortland Sunday. Ithaca had a 334 and a 328. Drew (357-363-720), Suffolk (383-367-750), Nazareth (379-376-755) and Utica (398-361-759) rounded out the team scoring.

Danielle Bambola (Miller Place) earned tournament medalist for the third straight week, along with capturing her third Cortland fall tournament title in as many years, by a convincing nine-stroke margin. She registered a 74 Saturday, with an eagle and two birdies, and she birdied three holes Sunday on the way to a 73 for a two-day score of 147. Ithaca's Peyton Greco finished second with a 156 (80-76), and St. John Fisher's Emily Schultz, as an individual entry, was third with a 165 (82-83).

Cortland's other four team entries all finished in the top 11 of the 38-golfer field. Kristin Scali (Garrison/James I. O'Neill) tied for fourth place with a 168 (85-83), with one birdie each day. Jordana Testa (East Norwich/Oyster Bay) and Alivia Waldron (Saranac) tied for ninth place with scores of 170. Testa carded an 85 each day with a total of two birdies, and her total score matches her career best. Waldron, who set personal collegiate marks for best single round and two-day score, had an 84 Saturday – including three birdies – and an 86 Sunday.

Amanda Gaffney (Williamsville/Williamsville East) ended as part of a three-way tie for 11th place with a 171 (83-88). Her 16 pars over the two days were fifth highest in the field. As individual entries, Camryn McHale (East Greenbush/Columbia) tied for 24th place with a 190 (88-102) and Sydney Jennison (Marathon) was 35th with a 206 (109-99). McHale's first-day score and Jennison's second-day total were both career bests.

Cortland will compete at the Northeast Women's Golf Conference Championship next Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 5-6, at the Colonie Country Club in Voorheesville.
