Scoring Records Fall for Red Dragons at Season-Opening St. Lawrence Invitational

Jordana Testa was one of four Red Dragons to post career-best scores over the weekend
CANTON, N.Y. – The Cortland women's golf team set school scoring records for single-day and two-day totals and senior Danielle Bambola (Miller Place) broke her own school two-day scoring record by three strokes as the Red Dragons opened the season at the St. Lawrence Invitational Saturday and Sunday.

Cortland finished fourth out of nine teams with a final score of 633. The Red Dragons posted a 319 Saturday and a 314 Sunday. The two-day score of 633 breaks the previous school record of 636 set at St. Lawrence in 2017, and the 314 on Sunday betters the old school record of 316 set at St. Lawrence in both 2016 and 2017.

NYU won the team title with a 581 (289-292), followed by Middlebury with a 626 (325-301). Hamilton finished just one stroke ahead of Cortland with a 632 (317-315), and Ithaca placed fifth behind the Red Dragons with a 640 (323-317).

Bambola was one of four Red Dragons to post career-best collegiate scores over the weekend. She finished in second place out of 48 golfers with a 144, breaking her previous best of 147 set both last fall at the Cortland Martin and Wallace Invitational and last spring at the Vassar Invitational. She opened with a 73 on Saturday, including three birdies, and tied her own school single-round record Sunday with a 71 behind a five-birdie effort. Bambola had previously shot a 71 at Vassar last spring.

Sophomore Amanda Gaffney (Williamsville/Williamsville East) finished in 13th place with a career-best 159. She opened the tournament with a career-best 79 and followed that with an 80. Her previous personal bests were an 84 and a 171 at Vassar last spring. Gaffney registered two birdies Saturday and one Sunday.

Junior Kristin Scali (Garrison/James I. O'Neill) tied for 14th place with a personal-best 160. She carded an 81 on Saturday and then recorded three birdies on Sunday en route to a career-best tying 79. Her previous best round of 163, which also included a 79 daily score, came at last fall's William Smith Invitational.

Sophomore Jordana Testa (East Norwich/Oyster Bay) placed 29th with a career-best 170. She opened with an 86 Saturday and improved to an 84 Sunday. Each round was better than her previous best of 88 at last spring's Ithaca Invitational, and her total easily broke her previous Red Dragon best of 182 at last year's Cortland Martin and Wallace Invitational.

Freshman Alivia Waldron (Saranac) rounded out Cortland's contingent with a 178 to tie for 33rd place. She registered an 89 each day.

Cortland returns to action next Saturday and Sunday at the William Smith Invitational in Clifton Springs.
