Cortland Comes Up Just Short in 68-66 Loss at Oswego

OSWEGO, N.Y. – Jeremiah Sparks scored 31 points and grabbed 13 rebounds as host Oswego held off Cortland, 68-66, in SUNYAC men's basketball action.

Brendan Fitzpatrick (Plainview/Plainview-Old Bethpage) led Cortland (9-4, 3-3 SUNYAC) with a career-high 17 points and a career-high tying seven rebounds, along with four assists. He was 3-for-4 from 3-point range. Eric Edwards (Binghamton) made 7-of-10 shots from the field and finished with 16 points, seven rebounds and four blocked shots.

Austin Grunder (Trumansburg/Charles O. Dickerson) ended with 13 points and 16 rebounds. Isaiah Preston (Penfield) and Ryan Schmadel (Oriskany) each scored six points.

Sparks made 11-of-20 shots overall and 5-of-10 3-point attempts for Oswego, which improved to 11-2 overall and 5-1 in the SUNYAC> Brandan Gartland scored 14 points, including four 3-pointers, and Joe Sullivan grabbed 13 rebounds. Liam Sanborn led the Lakers with five assists.

Oswego led by 14 points with 4:46 left in the half, but Cortland closed to within seven at 33-26 on a Fitzpatrick trey in the final seconds of the period.

The Red Dragons trailed by 12 with 16 minutes left but went on a 20-6 run to take a 50-48 lead with 9:57 remaining. Grunder and Fitzpatrick each scored six points and Ben Walters (Lockport/Starpoint) added five points during that span.

Sparks made three 3-pointer during a 9-0 Oswego run that put the Lakers up seven with 8:33 left. Cortland clawed back to within a point at 57-56 on an Edwards jumper with 6:24 left, and was still within a point when Edwards hit a shot at the 4:24 mark.

Sparks nailed a trey with 2:56 remaining and a layup with 38 seconds left to extend Oswego's lead to six. Fitzpatrick converted a three-point play with 28 seconds left to cut the deficit in half, and Oswego missed the front end of a one-and-one with 26 seconds remaining.

Cortland missed a potential game-tying 3-pointer with 10 seconds left and Sparks made two foul shots with seven ticks on the clock. Fitzpatrick, however, made a 3-pointer with about three seconds remaining to cut the Lakers' lead to two. Oswego missed the front end of another one-and-one with just over two seconds left. Grunder grabbed the rebound, but his desperation 3-point heave from three-quarters court was off the mark as the horn sounded.

Both teams finished with 25 made field goals – Cortland ended 25-of-56 (45 percent) and Oswego was 25-of-67 (37 percent). The Lakers hit 11 3-pointers compared to nine by the Red Dragons, and both teams converted seven free throws. The teams combined for only 14 turnovers – five by Oswego and nine by Cortland.

Cortland will host New Paltz in a SUNYAC contest Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
