SPRINGFIELD, MASS. – The Cortland wrestling team lost three matches at the Springfield Quad Duals Saturday afternoon to drop its record to 6-7 on the season. The Red Dragons opened with a 27-12 setback versus host school Springfield, fell to nationally eighth-ranked Johnson & Wales, 35-13, and wrapped up the day with an 18-16 loss to Castleton.
Against Springfield, Cortland fell behind 10-0 before freshman
Cahal Donovan Marietta/Marcellus) earned a 2-1 decision at 149 pounds. Junior
Gianno Silba (Newark) recorded a 6-3 decision at 157 pounds to pull the Red Dragons to within 10-6. After the Pride registered a decision at 165 pounds, the teams traded forfeits at the next two weights, giving Springfield a 19-9 advantage with two bouts remaining. The Pride sealed the win with a major decision at 197 pounds and finished off the match with a major decision at 285 pounds for the 27-12 final.

Ben Bivar (Noblesville, IN/Bainbridge-Guildford (NY) recorded a pin in 2:43 at 157 pounds to start the match, and sophomore
Demitreus Henry (Brooklyn/Grand Street Campus) earned a 7-2 decision at 174 pounds. Johnson & Wales, however, took control of the match with a forfeit, three pins and a decision in the next five weight classes to build a 31-9 lead. Freshman
Chandler Merwin (Walton) stopped the run with a 9-0 major decision at 141 pounds before the Wildcats wrapped up the match with a major decision at 149 pounds for the 35-13 final.
In the final match of the day, Cortland opened up a 12-3 lead over the Spartans through the first four weight classes. Donovan earned a 7-3 decision at 149 pounds, Bivar recorded a 6-1 decision at 157 pounds and Henry pinned his opponent in 6:33 at 174 pounds to raise his record to 23-5 on the season. After a double forfeit at 184 pounds, Castleton earned a decision at decision at 197 pounds to pull to within 12-6. Junior
Zach Herbert (Sparta, NJ) took a 9-1 major decision at 285 pounds, and the Red Dragons held a 16-6 lead with three bouts remaining. The Spartans picked up a decision and a pin and trailed 16-15 before the final weight class and secured the team victory with a 4-1 decision at 141 pounds for the 18-16 win.
