OSWEGO, N.Y. – Oswego recorded pins in the final two weight classes to erase a two-point deficit and defeated Cortland, 28-18, on Saturday. The Red Dragons dropped to 7-8 with the setback. The Lakers improved to 6-9 with the win.
The match opened at 285 pounds where Cortland freshman
Trentyn Rupert (Newark Valley) earned a pin in 1:03 in his first career bout to put Cortland ahead, 6-0. Oswego gailed the lead, 9-3 with a 6-5 decision at 125 pounds and a fall at 133 pounds. The Red Dragons then won the next two weight classes to build a 15-9 advantage. Freshman
Chandler Merwin (Walton) recorded a 15-0 technical fall at 141 pounds to improved to 16-11 on the season, and freshman
Cahal Donovan (Marietta/Marcellus) posted a 13-5 major decision at 149 pounds to raise his record to 16-5.
Oswego regained the lead at 16-15 with a 4-2 decision at 149 pounds and a major decision at 165 pounds. The Red Dragons grabbed the advantage back, pulling ahead 18-16, on sophomore
Demitreus Henry's 6-0 decision at 174 pounds to improve his record to 25-5 on the campaign.
The Lakers took the lead for good with a pin at 184 pounds and sealed the win with a first-period fall at 197 pounds for the 28-18 final.
Cortland wraps up its regular season with a dual match at Ithaca on Wednesday, Feb. 19, as part of the Rumble and Tumble meet with women's gymnastics.
