Nick Galeto was the 100-yard backstroke runner-up in 51.04 seconds, breaking his own school record set last year
BUFFALO, N.Y. – Senior
Nick Galeto (West Islip) broke his own school record in the 100-yard backstroke during a runner-up performance and also led off Cortland's second-place 200-yard medley relay team during the second full day of competition at the 2020 SUNYAC Men's Swimming and Diving Championships.
Cortland is currently in third place out of nine schools in the team standings. The Red Dragons have 323 points, less than 20 behind second-place Oswego (342.5). Geneseo is the team leader with 680.5 points. Following Cortland is Oneonta (239), Brockport (232.5), New Paltz (230), Fredonia (194), Buffalo State (192.5) and Potsdam (111). The final day of competition will be held Saturday at Erie Community College's Burt Flickinger Center.
Galeto's runner-up time of 51.04 seconds in the 100 backstroke eclipsed his previous school record of 51.36 seconds, which he set last season. Galeto,
Dylan Cornelia (Deer Park),
Billy Donlevy (Bayside/Holy Cross) and
Aiden Poli (Cortland/Home schooled) finished second in the 200 medley relay in 1:36.32.
Jason Boyko (Poughkeepsie/Our Lady of Lourdes) turned in a third-place effort in the 400-yard individual medley in 4:12.66. The top three finishers in each event earn All-SUNYAC honors. Winners are first team, runners-up are second team and third-place finishers are third team.
Cortland had four other swimmers compete in Friday's "A" finals.
Tim Rokos (Duanesburg) finished fourth in the 400 IM (4:13.26),
Hunter Bernhardt (Groton) was sixth in the 200-yard freestyle (1:45.09, 1:44.89 prelims),
Josh Chamak (New City/Clarkstown North) finished seventh in the 400 IM (4:18.32, 4:14.69 prelims), and Cornelia was eighth in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:01.07, 1:00.16 prelims).
Tom Ryan (Long Beach) won the "B" final in the 100 backstroke in 54.47 seconds for a ninth-place overall showing. He also finished 16th in the 100-yard butterfly (55.61, 54.92 prelims).
Alex Fisher (Smithtown/Hauppauge) placed 10th in the 100 breaststroke (1:00.21) and Donlevy finished 10th in the 100-yard butterfly (52.91).

Pat Conway (Wantagh/Kellenberg Memorial) in 1-meter diving (11th place, 386.05 pts., 391.40 pts. prelims);
Danny Swift (Millerton/Webutuck) in the 100 butterfly (14th place, 53.78, 53.58 prelims);
Ian Murray (Moravia/Southern Cayuga) in the 100 backstroke (15th place, 56.31, 55.66 prelims); and
Noah Farmer (New Hartford) in the 100 breaststroke (15th place, 1:01.27, 1:01.15 prelims).
