BUFFALO, N.Y. – Sophomore
Hunter Bernhardt (Groton) won the 1,650-yard freestyle – his second title in three days – and was named the Men's Outstanding Swimmer of the Meet to help the Cortland finish in second place out of nine schools at the 2020 SUNYAC Men's Swimming and Diving Championships. The event was held at Erie Community College's Burt Flickinger Center.
Cortland entered Saturday's final day of competition in third place, 19.5 points behind Oswego. The Red Dragons slowly closed ground on the Lakers and eventually passed them in the second-to-last event, the 200-yard butterfly, before securing the second-place finish with a third-place effort in the final relay. Geneseo won its seventh straight league title with 964.5 points, followed by Cortland (500.5) and Oswego (492.5). New Paltz placed fourth (331), barely ahead of Oneonta (326), with Brockport (290.5), Fredonia (284.5), Buffalo State (252.5) and Potsdam (132) rounding out the scoring.
Cortland has finished second two of the last three years and has been a top-four finisher in the conference each of the last 17 years.
Bernhardt won the 1,650-yard freestyle in 16:23.27. On Thursday, Bernhardt won the 500-yard freestyle (4:39.50), and he was sixth in the 200-yard freestyle on Friday (1:45.09, 1:44.89 prelims).
