Senior Spotlight: Track and Field's Courtney Maurin

With the cancellation of the remainder of the spring season and the winter championships, the Cortland seniors and graduate students from those rosters will be highlighted each week. Today's featured student-athlete is senior Courtney Maurin from the women's track and field team.

When did you start competing in your specific sport?
I started running when I was in fourth grade. I used to compete in pumpkin runs and races held through the school. But, specifically, I started track in ninth grade.

What is your major and why have you chosen it?
I'm a graphic design/digital media major. I chose it because I have loved doing art and using my creativity since I was really young.

If you weren't playing your sport at the collegiate level, what other sport do you think you would be competing in at the collegiate level?
If I wasn't running, I'd be playing soccer. I played soccer competitively just as long, if not longer, than I have been running.

If you had only one sport to play the rest of your life, besides your sport at Cortland, what would it be?
Soccer, 100 percent. I know it best. I can go out and kick a ball around for hours, and I wouldn't get bored.

Why did you choose Cortland to continue your athletic career?
I chose Cortland for running mainly because I loved the atmosphere and Coach Patrick's outlook on the whole sport. He was 100 percent committed, therefore, so am I.

What is your favorite memory at Cortland as a student-athlete?
As a student-athlete, it's hard to narrow it down to one thing. But if I had to, it would be cross country SUNYACs in 2018 at Fredonia. It was horrible weather, the course was knee-deep with mud, and it was cold and raining. But when our team completed that race and coach found out we came in second place, we were all speechless. It felt like we won the conference championship, and that feeling was priceless. We hadn't placed that well in a while and knowing how hard we fought was a great feeling afterwards.

What is your favorite memory at Cortland as a student?
As a student, like I said before, it's hard to narrow it down to one favorite memory. Everything has been amazing, but if I had to choose, my favorite memory has to have been the last three days here at Cortland when we found out we weren't coming back. We shoved three months into three days, and we made the most of those days with great people and so many laughs.

If you had to eat just one fruit the rest of your life, what would it be?
Watermelon.

Would you rather go bowling, throw darts or shoot pool?
Bowling. (I used to bowl competitively.)

Would you rather go fishing, go sledding or go for a hike?
Go for a hike, hands down.

What show are you most likely to binge watch now that you have more free time?
The Following for the third time.

What are your plans after this semester?
After this semester, I will most likely look for jobs in New York City. If possible…

What are your thoughts about the shutdown of athletics throughout all divisions?
It's sad and unexpected, which isn't fun. But stuff happens, and you have to deal with it the best you can. Things happen for a reason, so in the end, some good will come from all of this. We may not be competing, but we can still run. Wish I knew it was my last race ever, but I'm still thankful I got to run in the first place.

Will you consider using the extra year of eligibility that the NCAA has allowed due to the shutdown?
No.

If you needed to turn to one teammate in a crisis situation, who would that be and why?
Jill Leggiero, she knows how to calm me down and knows me best.

If you needed a teammate to make you laugh, who would it be?
Cabel McCandless, Jake Anweiler or James Forte.

Yes or no, milk in meatballs?
Milk in meatballs??? No?
