Cortland Hurt by the Long Ball in Season-Opening Losses at #16 Salisbury

SALISBURY, MD. – Nationally 16th-ranked Salisbury hit a combined five home runs, including Emily Allen's game-winning homer in the bottom of the seventh in the first game, as the Sea Gulls swept Cortland, 3-2 and 13-2, at Salisbury's Sea Gull Classic.

Cortland, which was playing for the first time this season, is now 0-2 and will face the University of Lynchburg in a doubleheader Sunday at noon in Salisbury (Henry S. Parker Complex) to wrap up its appearance in the tournament. Salisbury, which entered the weekend ranked second nationally in Division III with 17 homers through its first 13 games, improved to 13-2 with the victories.

GAME 1: Salisbury 3, Cortland 2

Salisbury took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second on a one-out homer by Abby Mace. Cortland went up 2-1 in the top of the fifth when Lexi Szasnat (Schenectady/Colonie) reached on a one-out infield single, went to second on a wild pickoff throw, and Cailey Cuttita (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) hit a two-run homer to left.

The Sea Gulls tied the game in the bottom of the fifth. Madi Lemon singled and Alissa Saverino reached on an error during a sac bunt to put runners on first and second. A wild pitch moved the runners to second and third and Dakotah Fraley hit a sac fly to right to score Lemon. After a walk, Cortland pitcher Cady Walts (Cortland) got out of further trouble with a caught stealing and a flyout.

Cortland threatened in the sixth when two-out singles by Alyssa Finno (Hurley/Kingston) and Sabrina Caputo (Westbury/W.T. Clarke) put runners on second and third, but Salisbury starter Savannah Sheats got the next batter to hit a soft liner to second to end the inning. Allen ended the game in the bottom of the seventh with her leadoff homer to deep right.

Cuttita finished 2-for-3 with two RBI for the Red Dragons, who out-hit Salisbury, 6-4. Walts allowed four hits and two walks and struck out four over six innings. Sheats improved to 7-1 with the win after allowing six hits and no walks with eight strikeouts.

GAME 2: Salisbury 13, Cortland 2 (5 inn.)

Kaleigh Edwards hit two of Salisbury's three homers in the nightcap and finished 2-for-3 with five RBI. She hit two-run homers in the top of the first and top of the fourth and drove in the Sea Gulls' final run with a sac fly in the fifth. Natalie Paoli also drove in five runs with a three-run homer in the third and a two-run single in the fourth, and Fraley finished 3-for-4 with two doubles, an RBI and two runs.

Szesnat was 2-for-2 with a double and Taylor Felicello (Marlboro) went 1-for-2 with a walk for Cortland. The Red Dragons closed to within 2-1 on a two-out error in the first and were within 4-2 after a Szesnat leadoff double and a Megan Weber (Lockport/Starpoint) two-out, RBI infield single in the second. Salisbury scored four runs each in the third and fourth innings and one in the top of the fifth, and the game was called after the bottom of the fifth due to the eight-run rule.

Cortland starter Courtney Kane (Yaphank/Bellport) allowed seven runs, but only three earned, in two innings. She gave up four hits, struck out three and walked two. Salisbury starter Lindsey Windsor picked up her fifth win in six decisions after giving up four hits, one walk and two runs, one earned, with four strikeouts in three and a third innings.
