Senior Spotlight: Track and Field's Jesse Correale

With the cancellation of the remainder of the spring season and the winter championships, the Cortland seniors and graduate students from those rosters will be highlighted each week. Today's featured student-athlete is senior Jesse Correale from the women's track and field team.

When did you start competing in your specific sport?
I joined track freshmen year of high school. I finished my soccer season and got bored so I walked down to track practice in the park one day and asked to join. The high school coach at the time asked, "Can you run?" And I said, "I think so." He then wanted to test me so I ran in circles for 30 minutes straight.

What is your major and why have you chosen it?
My major is community health and my concentration is healthcare administration and planning. I chose this major because it had all aspects of health sciences and business, which are two topics that I am very interested in.

If you weren't playing your sport at the collegiate level, what other sport do you think you would be competing in at the collegiate level?
Soccer.

If you had only one sport to play the rest of your life, besides your sport at Cortland, what would it be?
Soccer.

Why did you choose Cortland to continue your athletic career?
The Cortland athletic atmosphere made me feel at home. I like surrounding myself with hardworking people, and Cortland was just that.

What is your favorite memory at Cortland as a student-athlete?
My favorite memory as a student-athlete was going to away meets with my team. The more time we spent together, the more I got to know about people. Track allowed me to create friendships with people I wouldn't usually have.

What is your favorite memory at Cortland as a student?
As a student, I liked being able to study with my team at the library. It made it easier, and it was nice to have a support system. We would sit in the same area every day.

If you had to eat just one fruit the rest of your life, what would it be?
Avocado! (Yes, it is a fruit.)

Would you rather go bowling, throw darts or shoot pool?
Throw darts.

Would you rather go fishing, go sledding or go for a hike?
Go on a hike.

What are your plans after this semester?
Getting my master's in Healthcare Management.

What are your thoughts about the shutdown of athletics throughout all divisions?
Very saddening. I was crushed when I heard the news. However, there are more serious things in life that need to be taken care of now.

Will you consider using the extra year of eligibility that the NCAA has allowed due to the shutdown?
I will definitely consider it. However, most of the master's programs I am applying to do not have track teams.

If you needed to turn to one teammate in a crisis situation, who would that be and why?
Kaylee Uhl. We have become so close since being on a team together. We have both helped each other mentally, physically and emotionally through different life events. I know she will always be there for me in a way that many friends may not be.

If you needed a teammate to make you laugh, who would it be?
Kim White. She is so funny and doesn't even mean for it.

Yes or no, milk in meatballs?
ABSOLUTELY NOT. Do you want all the Italian grandmas in the world to turn in their grave?!
