With the cancellation of the remainder of the spring season and the winter championships, the Cortland seniors and graduate students from those rosters will be highlighted each week. Today's featured student-athlete is senior
Liam Joyce from the men's track and field team.
When did you start competing in your specific sport?
I started competing in my sport when I was in seventh grade.
Â
What is your major and why have you chosen it?
I pursued a GIS (Geographic Information Systems) major. I chose this major because I knew I wanted something that taught technical skills but also was scientific. I thought both those characteristics complemented each other well.
Â
If you weren't playing your sport at the collegiate level, what other sport do you think you would be competing in at the collegiate level?
If I wasn't doing track at Cortland I think I'd be playing football.
Â
If you had only one sport to play the rest of your life, besides your sport at Cortland, what would it be?
Football. I like contact sports.
Â
Why did you choose Cortland to continue your athletic career?
I chose to continue my career at Cortland because they have had a very successful program, and I knew they'd help bring out the best in my own ability.
Â
What is your favorite memory at Cortland as a student-athlete?
My favorite memory at Cortland was winning the 4x100 relay at SUNYACs last year. It had a tense final stretch, but I'm glad we pulled it out in the end.
Â
What is your favorite memory at Cortland as a student?
I think my favorite memory as a student was getting past my Python programming class with a B, because it was one it the most difficult courses I've taken and I dedicated a lot of time to it.
Â
If you had to eat just one fruit the rest of your life, what would it be?
Bananas.
Â
Would you rather go bowling, throw darts or shoot pool?
I personally would rather shoot pool.
Â
Would you rather go fishing, go sledding or go for a hike?
I'd rather go on a hike.
Â
What show are you most likely to binge watch now that you have more free time?
Star Wars: The Clone Wars. Best Star Wars content ever created.
Â
What are your plans after this semester?
My plans after this semester are to work and save some money while also looking for a job in my field. I also plan to stay in great physical shape, too, as track has allowed me to do.
Â
What are your thoughts about the shutdown of athletics throughout all divisions?
It's sad that everything shut down so suddenly. I never would have thought a virus first reported at the end of last year halfway across the world would have ended my senior season. However, I understand public health is more important.
Â
Will you consider using the extra year of eligibility that the NCAA has allowed due to the shutdown?
Yes. I will 100 percent consider using another year of eligibility.
Â
If you needed to turn to one teammate in a crisis situation, who would that be and why?
I would probably turn to my fellow sprinter
Peyton Lalone. I know him the best on the team, and I know he's someone I can trust.
Â
If you needed a teammate to make you laugh, who would it be?
Wendell Brand. He's a funny guy.
Â
Yes or no, milk in meatballs?
Is that a rhetorical question? Absolutely.
