CORTLAND, N.Y. – Cortland registered a .374 team attack percentage, its second best this season, and the Red Dragons swept visiting New Paltz, 25-19, 25-18, 25-18, in a SUNYAC match.
Cortland won its 12th straight match and is now 17-2 overall and 6-0 in league play. The Red Dragons are a game ahead of both Geneseo (5-1) and Fredonia (6-2) in the league standings with three conference matches left – Saturday at home versus Oneonta and next Friday and Saturday at Plattsburgh and Potsdam, respectively.
Cortland finished the match with 46 kills and just nine errors in 99 attempts. The Red Dragons hit .276 in the first set, followed by a .387 mark (13 kills, one error, 31 attempts) in the second and a .436 percentage (20 kills, three errors, 39 attempts) in the third.
Nicole Van Pelt (Montgomery/Valley Central) led the hosts with 14 kills and finished with a .303 attack percentage.
Hannah Southcott (Princeton, WV) had eight kills and a .333 hitting percentage,
Maya Owens (Nyack) totaled seven kills with no errors in 11 attempts for a .636 success rate, and
Alexa Guedez (Rye/Rye Neck) added seven kills and six solo blocks.
Danielle Fisk (Honeoye Falls/Honeoye Falls-Lima) matched her career best with six kills and committed no errors in eight attempts for a .750 attack percentage.
Caterina Mangogna (Manorville/Eastport-South Manor) contributed four kills with no errors in seven attempts,
Meadow Wittman (Colden/Springville Griffith Institute) had 16 assists and six digs, and
Ryan Hinshaw (Aurora, IL/Joliet Catholic Academy) picked up 14 assists.
Carly Haegele (Commack) led the team with 10 digs and three aces.
New Paltz (9-10, 4-2 SUNYAC) was paced by Victoria Konicki with 13 kills and Mackenzie Williams with 11 kills and six digs. Cate DiGiacomo dished out 34 assists.
Cortland scored seven straight points, six while Fisk was serving, to take a 17-7 lead in the first set. The Hawks got no closer than five points the rest of the set. An 8-1 run in the second set turned a 7-7 tie into a 15-8 Cortland lead, and once again the margin remained at five or more points the remainder of the set. The Red Dragons took control midway through the third set as well, with three straight Van Pelt kills capping a 7-0 run that pushed Cortland's lead to 19-10. Van Pelt put down seven of her 14 kills in the final set.
