OSWEGO, N.Y. -- The nationally 11th-ranked Cortland men's soccer team earned a 3-0 win in SUNYAC play at Oswego Saturday afternoon to move into a tie for first place in the conference with 18 points with two games remaining. The Red Dragons improved to 12-2-1 overall and 6-1 in the league, while the Lakers fell to 5-4-4 and 4-2-1.
Senior
Anthony Ruggiero (Holtsville/Sachem East) scored his eighth and ninth goals of the season, including his fifth game winner, to lead the Red Dragons. Graduate student
Blake Aronson (Huntington Station/Walt Whitman) recorded his team-high 10th goal of the season, and sophomores
Jaylin Sykes (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) and
Jack Coleman (Endwell/Maine-Endwell) chipped in with an assist.
Junior goalie
Braden Melveney (Syracuse/Cicero-North Syracuse) did not face a shot on goal in posting his seventh shutout of the season for Cortland. Goalie Brian Terra registered seven saves for Oswego.
Ruggiero scored what proved to be the game-winning goal in the 34th minute. Aronson made it a 2-0 game in the 62nd minute, driving a header past Terra off a serve from Coleman. Ruggiero completed the scoring 1:35 later with another unassisted effort for the 3-0 final.
The Red Dragons close their regular season with two key home games next weekend, facing Oneonta on Friday and the team they are currently tied with in the SUNYAC, New Paltz, on Saturday.
