WILLIAMSTOWN, MASS. – Behind the strength of a school record-setting final round, the SUNY Cortland women's golf team finished in first place out of eight schools in the Classic Division of the Williams College Women's Golf Fall Invitational.
Instead of one large field, the Williams tournament was conducted in two divisions this season at the Taconic Golf Club. Cortland won the Classic Division, while the host Ephs won the 10-team Championship Division.
Cortland led after Saturday's action with a 335, with Ithaca (336), Bates (339), Union (342) and Wesleyan of Connecticut (346) all close behind. The Red Dragons, however, easily outdistanced their competition on Sunday with a 307, breaking the previous school single-day record of 311 set earlier this season at St. Lawrence. The Red Dragons finished with a final score of 642, 28 strokes ahead of Ithaca (336-334-670), 40 better than Bates (339-343-682), 42 ahead of Wesleyan (346-338-684) and 43 ahead of both Union (342-343-685) and Bowdoin (351-334-685).
Paige Cerminaro (Howell, NJ) finished as tournament runner-up with a two-day score of 153, including a two-over par 73 on Sunday.
Claudia Winterberg (Harrisburg, NC/Hickory Ridge) was fourth in the 46-golfer field with a 157 after posting a one-over par 72 on Sunday. Danielle Landis of Wesleyan was the medalist with a 151 (80-71).
Winterberg's 72 is tied for the second-best round by a Cortland golfer since the program restarted in 1997.
Danielle Bambola carded a 71 on three separate occasions during her recently concluded career. Cerminaro's 73 on Sunday is tied for the eighth best round by a Red Dragon.
Alivia Waldron (Saranac) tied for eighth place with a 165 (84-81),
Amanda Gaffney (Williamsville/Williamsville East) tied for 18th place with a 173 (86-87), and
Sophie Oristian (Gaithersburg, MD/Quince Orchard) tied for 29th place with a 182, improving by 20 strokes from a 101 Saturday to an 81 Sunday.
Cerminaro recorded four birdies and nine pars during her Sunday round and had a birdie and nine pars Saturday. Winterberg notched two birdies and 13 pars on Sunday along with a birdie and seven pars Saturday. Waldron parred eight holes each day and added two birdies on Sunday, while Gaffney registered a combined 13 pars over the two-day event. Oristian had eight pars and nothing worse than a bogey during her Sunday round.
Cortland's 307 was better than the Sunday scores of seven of the 10 teams in the championship division, as well as eight of the 10 scores during Saturday's championship division play.
Cortland concludes its fall schedule next Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 9-10, at the Nazareth Invitational. The opening round will be held at the Links at Greystone in Walworth and the final round will be at the Irondequoit Country Club in Pittsford.
