Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Cortland Falls to Ohio Wesleyan, 2-1, in NCAA First Round

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Sophomore Megan Knee (San Diego, CA/Mt. Carmel) scored 5:56 into overtime to lift the Ohio Wesleyan field hockey team to a come-from-behind 2-1 victory at nationally 15th-ranked Cortland Wednesday afternoon in the first round of the NCAA Div. III Field Hockey Tournament. The Battling Bishops improved to 11-5 on the season and advanced to face Rowan in the second round this Saturday.

Freshman Keirra Ettere (Mahopac/Lakeland) concluded her record-breaking season with the lone goal for the Red Dragons (16-3), her 26th of the campaign. Freshman Hanna Corrigan (Barneveld/Holland Patent) assisted on the goal. Senior goalie Megan McGuinness (Carle Place) made three saves.

Sophomore Emily Streeter (Acton, MA/Acton-Boxborough) also scored a goal for Ohio Wesleyan. Senior Astrid Koek (Maastricht, the Netherlands/Erasmus) and freshman Colleen McMenamin (Chester, NJ/West Morris Regional) each recorded an assist. Freshman goalie Meg McCarthy (Trumbull, CT) turned aside nine shots.

After a scoreless first quarter in which Cortland outshot Ohio Wesleyan, 3-2, the Red Dragons were forced to play two players down for 1:42 early in the second quarter and then an additional 3:18 down one player and were able to keep the Battling Bishops off the scoreboard. Ettere gave the Red Dragons a 1-0 lead 1:02 before the end of the first half. Corrigan fed a pass into the circle on the left side, and Ettere blasted a shot inside the left post. The lead help up until the 40:44 mark when the Battling Bishops tied the game. McMenamin controlled the ball at the end line on the right side of the cage. McGuinness came out of her cage to contest the play, but McMenamin was able to slide a pass out front where Streeter one-timed a shot into the empty goal.

The fourth quarter was tightly played with Cortland registering the only shot of the 15 minutes, and the game headed to overtime tied at 1-1. Just over two minutes into the 7-versus-7 period, Cortland junior Lily Fox (Northport) broke free into the circle, and McCarthy came off her line and took Fox down leading to a penalty stroke. After Fox apparently ended the game with a shot into the upper left, the goal was waved off and the game continued.

Just under four minutes later, the Battling Bishops scored the game winner. Streeter inserted the ball on a penalty corner. Koek pushed a pass to her left, and Knee sent a shot into the upper right to give Ohio Wesleyan the 2-1 victory.
