Red Dragons Pull Away in Second Half for 92-64 Win vs. Houghton at UR Tourney

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Austin Grunder (Trumansburg/Charles O. Dickerson) scored 26 points and hauled in 13 rebounds, and was one of four Cortland double-figure scorers, as the Red Dragons defeated Houghton, 92-64, to take third place at the University of Rochester Chuck Resler Tournament. 
 
Grunder was 10-of-21 from the floor and made all five of his free throws. Kareem Lubin (South Blooming Grove/Washingtonville) scored a career-high 15 points on 6-of-10 shooting and added five rebounds, Eric Edwards (Binghamton) finished with 15 points, 13 rebounds, five steals and four assists, and AJ Lawton (Saratoga Springs) had 12 points and three assists. Lawton was 4-of-7 from 3-point range. 
 
Also for the Red Dragons (1-1), Danny Linehan (Blauvelt/Tappan Zee) finished with seven points and four assists, Brad Nelson (Jamestown/Frewsburg) scored five points, and Humberto Cabrera (Millbrook) and Shannon Newkirk-Denny (Queens/The Pomfret School) each had four assists. Cabrera also registered three steals. 
 
Houghton (0-3) got 12 points and five rebounds from Jajuan Preaster and 10 points, eight rebounds and five assists from AJ Bass. 
 
Leading by four points with 4:25 left in the first half, Cortland finished the period on a 9-3 run to take a 42-32 halftime lead. Grunder scored six points and Edwards had three during that stretch, and Grunder finished the first half with 18 points. The Red Dragon lead slowly grew in the second half, reaching the 20-point mark about nine minutes in and the 30-point level with about six minutes left. 
 
Cortland travels to Ithaca for a non-league game Wednesday at 7 p.m.
