Red Dragons Earn 2-1 Statement Win vs. #4 Statesmen

Box Score GENEVA, N.Y. - Junior Trevor Veneklase (Brentwood, TN/Seahawks Hockey Club) scored early in the third period to break a tie game and the goal held up as the Cortland men's hockey team defeated nationally fourth-ranked Hobart, 2-1, Saturday afternoon in non-conference action.

Sophomore Cameron Knowlton (Kenai, AK/Charlotte Rush) also netted a goal for the Red Dragons (3-2) with senior Jacob Gaydos (Sandusky, OH/Wisconsin Rapid Riverkings) and sophomores Liam Anderson (East York, ON/Pickering Panthers) and Nate Berke (Williamsville/Buffalo Jr. Sabres) each recording an assist. Junior goalie Luca Durante (Brampton, ON/Aurora Tigers) turned aside 29 shots.

PA Martineau scored the goal for the Statesmen (4-1-1). Chase Bell and Griffen Sanom registered assists. Goalie Joe Halstrom made 18 saves.

Hobart took a 1-0 lead just 33 seconds into the game on Martineau's second goal of the season. The Red Dragons evened the score 30 seconds into the second period on Knowlton's third goal of the season.

Just past the midway point of the second period, the Statesmen took a five-minute major but successfully killed off the penalty to keep the game tied at 1-1. Veneklase netted the game winner at the 3:14 mark of the third period, and the Red Dragons had to kill off a major penalty of their own starting 8:29 into the period to hold the 2-1 lead. Hobart pulled Halstrom late for an extra skater but could not generate a shot as Cortland sealed the 2-1 victory.
