CRANSTON, R.I. – Nine Cortland wrestlers earned first-place finishes in their pools at the non-team scoring Rhode Island Open, held Saturday at Cranston High West. The tournament format allowed for most of the competitors to wrestle twice, with some seeing action three times.
 
Richard Munoz (Centereach/Ward Melville) won the 125-pound B Pool with a 2-0 record, including a pin and a technical fall. Cortland took top honors in three different pools at 133 pounds - Vinnie Santilli (South Glens Falls) was 2-0 with a pin and a technical fall in the A Pool, Tyler Bisono (Hauppauge) was 2-0 in the C Pool, and Noah Orser (Kent/Carmel) was 2-0 with a pin and a major decision in the D Pool.
 
Kyle Klein (Miller Place) finished 2-0 with two pins to win the B Pool at 149 pounds, and Chandler Merwin (Walton) tied for first in the A Pool at 157 pounds with a 2-1 record, including a major decision.
 
Steven Gazzillo (New Windsor/Cornwall) posted a 3-0 record with a pin to captured the A Pool at 165 pounds. Demitreus Henry (Brooklyn/Grand Street Campus) won the 174-pound A Pool with a 2-0 mark, with one major decision. At 197 pounds, Brian Torres (Brooklyn/Grand Street Campus) won his lone match to finish first in the A Pool.
 
Cortland will host the NYS Collegiate Tournament on Saturday, Nov. 20, at 9 a.m. at Lusk Field House. No spectators will be allowed due to the size of the tournament and the lack of seating in the facility.
