ONEONTA, N.Y. - Giuliana Pritchard scored 20 points and Hartwick's defense held Cortland to 24 percent shooting from the floor as the host Hawks defeated the Red Dragons, 55-49, in a non-league game.
Nyia Longford (Medford/Longwood) led Cortland (1-2) with 20 points, 14 rebounds and four steals.
Maggie Malone (Cornwall) finished with nine points and 15 rebounds, including nine offensive boards, and
Casey Travers (Manorville/Eastport-South Manor) scored seven points, grabbed four rebounds and handed out three assists.
Pritchard made 6-of-11 shots for the Hawks (3-1) and added six rebounds and two assists to her 20-point night. Mikyla Mitchell scored nine points and Danielle DeBiase added eight points and four boards. Bree Fargnoli paced the hosts with seven rebounds.
Cortland finished with a 54-37 overall rebounding advantage and a 25-9 margin on the offensive glass, but the Red Dragons had trouble capitalizing on their extra chances. Cortland finished 16-of-68 from the floor, including just 2-of-27 from 3-point range. Hartwick finished the night at 37 percent overall and 44 percent (4-of-9) from the arc.
Hartwick led 10-9 after one quarter and 24-21 at halftime. It was 29-26 midway through the third before the Hawks scored seven straight points to go up by 10 at 36-26. Cortland did manage to get back to within six by the end of the period, and the Red Dragons were down 41-37 after a Longford free throw with 6:44 remaining. Cortland was still in the game down five at 49-44 when Longford hit a foul shot with 2:10 left. The Red Dragons got a steal but missed a 3-pointer, and Kayley Ericson hit two foul shots at the 1:17 mark to put the Hawks up by seven.
Cortland missed two shots on its next possession and Pritchard sealed the Hartwick win with two free throws with 48 seconds left. The Hawks led by 11 with 25 seconds left before Cortland scored the final five points on two
Shannon McGuire (West Babylon) free throws and a Longford 3-pointer.
Cortland hosts Ithaca in a non-league game Friday at 7 p.m.
