CORTLAND, N.Y. –
Keirra Ettere (Mahopac/Lakeland) scored twice and Megan McGuinnes (Carle Place) recorded a shutout with two saves as second-seeded Cortland defeated third-seeded Geneseo, 2-0, in the SUNYAC tournament semifinals at the Cortland Stadium Complex.
Cortland (16-1), ranked 15th nationally in Division III, advances to the championship game Saturday at top-seeded and 17th-ranked New Paltz, which beat Oneonta, 2-0, in New Paltz in Wednesday's other semifinal game. Cortland's lone loss this season was a 4-2 setback at New Paltz on Oct. 9.
Ettere gave Cortland a 1-0 lead just over eight minutes into the game when she knocked in a rebound after a shot by
Jamie Snyder (North Syracuse/Cicero-North Syracuse) was saved by Geneseo goalie Sarah Quinlan. Ettere added another unassisted goal 3:11 into the third quarter when she created some space for herself in the circle and snuck a shot between Quinlan and the right post. Quinlan finished the game with three saves for the Knights, who finish the season with an 11-7 record.
Ettere leads Cortland with 25 goals this season and has recorded at least one goal or assist in all 16 games in which she has appeared. Her 25 goals are the third-highest total by a Red Dragon in school history, trailing only Carol Merchant's 29 goals in 1992 and Julie Gentner's 26 goals in 2002.
Neither team allowed the other to muster many offensive opportunities. Cortland held an 11-4 advantage in shots, while Geneseo earned six of the game's seven penalty corners.
