#5 Red Dragons Earn NCAA Berth with 6-0 Win vs. Oswego

CORTLAND, N.Y. –  Six different players scored goals as the nationally fifth-ranked and top-seeded Cortland men's soccer team defeated sixth-seeded Oswego St., 6-0, Saturday afternoon in the championship game of the 2021 SUNYAC Men's Soccer Championship at Holloway Field. The Red Dragons improved to 16-2-1 and earned an automatic berth in the NCAA Div. III playoffs. The field will be announced on Monday at 1:30 p.m. on NCAA.com.

Graduate student Lukas Rubio (Liverpool) recorded a goal and an assist for Cortland. Graduate student Blake Aronson (Huntington Station/Walt Whitman), senior Anthony Ruggiero (Holtsville/Sachem East), juniors Riley Williams (Watertown/South Jefferson) and Mike Hunsucker (Smithtown/Smithtown West) and sophomore Jack Coleman (Endwell/Maine-Endwell) each netted a goal with sophomore Jason Lee (Middle Village/Xavier) picking up an assist.

Junior goalie Braden Melveney (Syracuse/Cicero-North Syracuse) registered two saves in posting the shutout for the Red Dragons. Graduate student Brian Terra (Bay Shore/Sachem North) played the first 87:59 in goal for the Lakers (6-7-5), making four saves. Sophomore Matt D'Arpino (Endicott/Maine-Endwell) played the final 2:01.

Williams opened the scoring in the 13th minute when he beat Terra to a loose ball in the box and deposited a shot past two Oswego defenders. Ruggiero made it a 2-0 game in the 25th minute, heading a cross from Rubio inside the left post for his 10th goal of the season.

In the 53rd minute, Aronson, who was named the Most Valuable Player of the tournament, increased Cortland's lead to 3-0, knocking his own rebound in off a Laker defender after Terra made an initial save. Hunsucker then netted his first goal of the season off a loose ball near the top of the box that he sent inside the left post in the 60th minute. Coleman made it a 5-0 game in the 73rd minute, burying a penalty kick after Terra took him down in the box. Rubio completed the scoring with 40 seconds left in regulation, finishing off a breakaway into the upper left for his first goal of the season.

Joining Aronson on the All-Tournament Team are Williams and graduate students Scott Cebollero (Commack) and Nicholas Pfeiffer (Commack) from Cortland; senior Caleb Munski (Liverpool), junior Kieran Gilroy (North Bellmore/Mepham) and freshman HaJoon Lee (Pittsford/Pittsford Mendon) from Oswego; Theo Pencic and Pa Lu from Buffalo St.; and Ryan Hilliard and Owen McGarrity from New Paltz.
