WILKES-BARRE, PA. – Senior
Demitreus Henry (Brooklyn/Grand Street Campus) won the 174-pound title and junior
Chandler Merwin (Walton) finished second at 157 pounds as the Cortland wrestling team opened the season Saturday at the King's College Ned McGinley Invitational. In addition to Henry and Merwin, freshman
Cody Merwin (Walton), Chandler's brother, also was a place winner with a tie for third place at 125 pounds.
Henry posted a 4-0 record at 174 pounds, starting with a pin followed by 9-3 and 11-5 decisions. In the title match against NYU's Jason Geyer, Henry took a 2-1 lead on a takedown late in the second period, extended the lead early in the third with a stalling point and an escape, then gave up a stalling point with just under a minute remaining before holding on for the 4-2 victory.
Amongst the Merwin brothers, Chandler went 4-1 at 157 pounds and Cody was 3-1 at 125 pounds. Chandler opened with a pin, a 16-2 major decision, and another pin. In the semifinals, he trailed, 7-5, versus Charles Everdale of Wilkes before picking up an escape point with 1:01 remaining and the go-ahead takedown with 29 seconds left for an 8-7 victory. He lost in the finals to RIT's Kaidon Winters. Cody won his first three matches, two by pin, before dropping a 9-2 decision to eventual champ Samuel Braswell of Averett. His next scheduled opponent, however, had already reached the six-match limit for the day, and they both shared the third and fourth-place team points.
Eight other Red Dragons won at least two matches during the tournament.
Ryan Newman (Brooklyn/Wingate) went 5-1 at 184 pounds, with all five of his victories coming via pin. He lost his second match before winning four straight in the consolation bracket before reaching his six-match limit. Also at 184 pounds,
Michael Rivera (Mahopac) finished 4-2 with a pin and three decisions.
Steven Gazzillo (New Windsor/Cornwall) registered a 4-2 record at 165 pounds. After an opening loss, he won four straight matches, three by pin and one by medical forfeit, before losing in his final match of the afternoon.
At 125 pounds,
Richard Munoz (Centereach/Ward Melville) finished 3-2 with a pin and
Justin Amendola (Rocky Point) was 2-2, while at 149 pounds
Markel Browne (Brooklyn/Grand Street Campus) went 3-2 with a pin and
Kyle Klein (Miller Place) finished 2-2 with a major decision.
Brian Torres (Brooklyn/Grand Street Campus) registered a 3-2 record with a technical fall at 197 pounds.
Cortland finished seventh out of 15 schools in the final team standings with 79 points, a half point behind sixth-place York. RIT won the team title with 112 points, followed by Averett with 105 and Wilkes with 101.
The Red Dragons return to action on Saturday, Nov. 13, at a tournament hosted by Rhode Island College.
