Cortland Wins at SUNY Poly, 68-46, Behind Balanced Attack

UTICA, N.Y. – Fourteen players reached the scoring column as Cortland defeated host SUNY Poly, 68-46, in a non-league matchup for the Red Dragons' seventh straight win.
 
Maggie Malone (Cornwall) led Cortland (8-2) with 13 points and added two assists. Nyia Longford (Medford/Longwood) made 5-of-7 shots and finished with 11 points, four rebounds and two steals, and Flo Hunte (Elmont/Sewanhaka) totaled seven points, four rebounds and three steals.
 
Logan Streety (Elma/Iroquois) scored six points, dished out two assists and grabbed a team-high seven rebounds. Julia Siler (Seaford) led the team with a career-high five assists, Sarah Tully (East Aurora) had six rebounds, Jess Womble (Wheatley Heights/Half Hollow Hills East) hauled in a career-best five rebounds, and Corinne Miedreich (Pearl River) finished with three assists.
 
SUNY Poly (6-3), which had a three-game winning streak snapped, was led by Alexandra DeBeatham's 10 points. Molly Burdick and Kierra Connor each scored nine points, with Burdick adding a team-high seven rebounds, and Lauren Denny rang up three assists.
 
Cortland shot 44 percent from the field and held the Wildcats to 25 percent shooting.
 
The game was tied 8-8 midway through the first quarter before Cortland started to pull away. The Red Dragons led 19-12 after the first quarter after Streety's offensive rebound and layup at the buzzer, and Cortland opened the second quarter on a 12-2 run to take a 31-14 lead with 5:55 left before halftime. Malone scored four points early in the run, and Hunte finished the stretch with a layup, followed by a steal of the ensuing inbounds pass and another layup.
 
Cortland extended its lead to 41-21 at the half and led by between 18-24 points the entire second half.
 
Cortland is idle until Jan. 4 when it will host currently unbeaten St. Lawrence in a 1 p.m. non-league game.
