WILLIAMSPORT, PA. – The Cortland wrestling team finished 2-1 at the Lycoming College Rennie Rodarmel All State Duals, defeating Penn College of Technology, 30-6, and King's College (Pa.), 31-9, before falling to the host Warriors, 21-18. The matches were the Red Dragons' first duals of the season.
Four Red Dragons went 3-0 during the tournament –
Cody Merwin (Walton) at 133 pounds,
Kyle Klein (Miller Place) at 149 pounds,
Chandler Merwin (Walton) at 157 pounds, and
Demitreus Henry (Brooklyn/Grand Street Campus) at 174 pounds. Henry is currently ranked eighth nationally at 174 by D3Wrestle.com and is 10th nationally and second in the Mideast by the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA).
Chandler Merwin is ranked second in the Mideast and
Cody Merwin is ranked fourth in the Mideast by the NWCA.
In the win over Penn College, the Red Dragons opened with five wins to take a 17-0 lead – a technical fall by (Cody) Merwin at 133 and decisions by
Justin Amendola (Rocky Point) at 125,
Vinnie Santilli (South Glens Falls) at 141, Klein at 149 and (Chandler) Merwin at 157. Cortland also received a decision by Henry at 174, a 13-0 major decision by
Chris Bold (Miller Place) at 197, and
Ben Klei's (Victor) forfeit win at 285. The Wildcats picked up decisions by Michael Molloy (165) and Jacob Kallenborn (184).
Cortland also got off to a quick start versus King's, taking a 21-0 lead after five bouts. Amendola won by technical fall, (Cody) Merwin and Santilli won by decisions, Klein picked up a pin, and (Chandler) Merwin won by technical fall. The Red Dragons' other two victories were a decision by Henry and a pin by Klei. King's earned its nine points via decisions from Cameron Leslie (165), William Grace (184) and Rich Fronheiser (197).
In their final match of the day, the Red Dragons lead 18-11 with two matches left before the hosts rallied for the win on a pin by Gable Crebs at 197 and a major decision by John Fulmer at 285. Crebs is ranked fourth in the Southeast at 197 by the NWCA, while Fulmer is ranked first in the Southeast and is among D3Wrestle.com's national "contenders" at 285.
Cortland was down 7-6 after four matches as (Cody) Merwin and Klein registered decisions, sandwiched around a Garrett Lee decision at 125 and a Wiley Kahler major decision at 141 for Lycoming. The Red Dragons took a 10-7 lead on (Chandler) Merwin's 10-0 major decision, but the Warriors answered with Preston Rogers' 11-2 major at 165.
Cortland scored eight points over the next two matches to take its 18-11 lead as Henry won by a 16-0 technical fall and
Brian Torres (Brooklyn/Grand Street Campus) won 8-1 at 184.
Cortland will return to Lycoming on Jan. 7-8 for the Budd Whitehill Duals.
