CORTLAND, N.Y. – Brockport pulled away from a tight game early in the second half and the visiting Golden Eagles defeated Cortland, 87-60, in SUNYAC men's basketball action.
Jahidi Wallace and Mekhi Beckett led Brockport (5-1, 2-0 SUNYAC) with 23 points apiece. Wallace also added a team-high six assists and Beckett had five rebounds and three steals. David Grady III scored 13 points and Brandon Kennedy-Gay finished with five points, five rebounds and four assists.
Cortland (2-4, 0-2 SUNYAC) was led by
Austin Grunder's (Trumansburg/Charles O. Dickerson) 13 points and nine rebounds. He hit 3-of-4 shots from the 3-point arc.
Danny Linehan (Blauvelt/Tappan Zee) scored 10 points, including two 3-pointers, and
Eric Edwards (Binghamton) scored nine points.
Kareem Lubin (South Blooming Grove/Washingtonville) finished with seven rebounds and a team-high four assists and
Isaiah Preston (Penfield) scored seven points.
Cortland opened the game with an 11-4 lead and still held a seven-point advantage at 34-27 after a Grunder 3-pointer with 2:42 left in the half. Brockport, however, scored the final seven points of the period to tie the game at halftime.
A Linehan 3-pointer with 17:40 remaining kept Cortland tied at 42-42. Brockport scored the next eight points, capped by a Beckett short jumper with 15:41 left, to take a 50-42 lead. The margin was still eight with 11:21 left, but the Golden Eagles went on a 10-0 streak to push the lead to 18 with 8:04 left and never looked back.
Brockport shot 49 percent from the floor overall and 54 percent in the second half. The Golden Eagles hit 56 percent of its 3-pointers (10-of-18) and were 17-of-19 (89.5 percent) from the foul line. Cortland shot 43 percent from the floor in the first half, but the Red Dragons dropped to just under 30 percent in the second half and finished at 37 percent. Cortland did make 12-of-28 3-pointers (43 percent), including three by Grunder and two each by Linehan,
Cam Williams (Rome/Rome Free Academy) and
Humberto Cabrera (Millbrook).
Cortland will travel to Fredonia Saturday for a 4 p.m. conference game.
