Red Dragons Hang on for 12-11 Win at Clarkson

POTSDAM, N.Y. – The nationally 23rd-ranked Cortland women's lacrosse team held on for a 12-11 victory at Clarkson Saturday afternoon in non-conference action. The Red Dragons evened their record at 1-1. The Golden Knights dropped to 1-2 with the loss.
 
Senior Hannah Lorenzen (Stony Brook/Ward Melville) and junior Hannah Keech (Penn Yan/Penn Yan Academy) led the Cortland offense with three goals apiece. Senior Cecilia Procopio (Syracuse/West Genesee) matched her career-high with six points on two goals and four assists.
 
Freshman Toni Cashman (East Moriches/Westhampton Beach) tallied one goal and one assist, and senior Hannah Tiso (Somers), junior Shelby Meduski (East Quogue/Westhampton Beach) and sophomore Kiki Meager (Syracuse/West Genesee) each netted a goal for the Red Dragons.
 
Cortland senior goalie Paige Potter (Cortland) registered a career-high 14 saves. Senior Kayla Petre (Hauppauge) collected five ground balls and caused four turnovers, junior Amanda Squillini (Stony Point/North Rockland) finished with four caused turnovers and three ground balls, and freshman Holly Wright (Huntington) contributed two ground balls and two caused turnovers.
 
Madelynn Barnum and Grace Hagberg paced the Clarkson offense with three goals each. Sydney Roderick recorded two goals and one assist, Kyrsten Stone netted a pair of goals, Julia Lavarnway added one goal and two assists and Abigail Johnson picked up an assist.
 
Goalie Emily Fischer stopped seven shots. Barnum secured nine draw controls, Stone had four caused turnovers and three ground balls, and Roderick recorded four ground balls and three caused turnovers.
 
The Golden Knights jumped out to a 3-0 lead less than five minutes into the game. The Red Dragons stopped the run with goals from Keech and Procopio before Clarkson pushed the lead to 5-2 at the 19:38 mark of the first half. Cortland responded by closing the opening 30 minutes with a four-goal run for a 6-5 lead at the break as four different players scored.
 
The Red Dragons increased their lead to 11-7 with 18:35 remaining in the game, but Clarkson netted the next two goals to pull to within 11-9 midway through the half. Keech made it a 12-9 score off an assist from Procopio at 4:24. The Golden Knights cut the lead to 12-10 at 3:39 and then made it a one-goal game with 1:02 to play. Clarkson won the ensuing draw control with possession and a chance to tie the game, but Squillini forced a turnover and secured the ground ball. After a timeout, the Red Dragons were able to run out the clock to seal the 12-11 win.
