Pitchers Strong, Giordano Homers Twice, in Doubleheader Sweep vs. Alfred St.

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Cortland pitching held visiting Alfred State scoreless for 16 out of 18 innings and Scott Giordano (Croton-on-Hudson/Croton-Harmon) homered in each game as the Red Dragons swept the visiting Pioneers, 6-2 and 8-1, in a pair of nine-inning, non-conference games.

Cortland (2-2) will host Clarkson in a non-league doubleheader Wednesday at 1 p.m. (start time moved a half hour later than originally scheduled).

Cortland 6, Alfred St. 2

Cortland fell behind 2-0 in the top of the first but kept Alfred State off the board the rest of the contest. Shane Mugnolo (Howard Beach/Xaverian) earned the win in relief with six innings of four-hit shutout ball. He struck out five and walked one. AJ Gartland went the distance for Alfred State and allowed nine hits and two walks with one strikeout.

Giordano, Daniel Coleman (Saratoga Springs) and Ben Rhodes (Amsterdam) each went 2-for-3 to account for six of the Red Dragons' nine hits. Giordano and Rhodes each reached base by a hit-by-pitch as well and Coleman added a walk to his two-hit outing, while Matthew Krafft (Cornwall) was 1-for-2 with a double, walk and sac bunt.

Justin LoTemple was 3-for-4 with an RBI, Ryan Santiago was 2-for-3 and Matteo Avallone finished 2-for-4 for the Pioneers, who outhit Cortland, 10-9.

Alfred State's two-run first started with a Tim Holler leadoff triple. He scored on Nick Serce's one-out double, and two batters later LoTemple hit an RBI single to left.

Cortland scored in the second on Chris Bonacci's (Syracuse/West Genesee) RBI single and tied the game in the third when Giordano led off with a double and eventually scored on a James Varian (Hopewell Junction/Trinity-Pawling) sac fly. Giordano broke the tie with a leadoff homer in the bottom of the fifth. Colin BeVard (Syracuse/West Genesee) followed with a triple and scored on a wild pitch.

The Red Dragons extended the lead to 5-2 in the sixth when Rhodes singles, moved to second on a Krafft sac bunt, took third on a groundout and scored on a wild pitch. Cortland completed the scoring in the eighth on an AJ Fenton (Kings Park) sac fly that plated Coleman, who had led off the inning with a single.
