CORTLAND, N.Y. –
Courtney Kane (Yaphank/Bellport) tossed a three-hit shutout and
Lexi Szesnat (Colonie) drove in both runs as Cortland defeated visiting Cobleskill, 2-0, to complete a sweep of a season-opening, non-league doubleheader versus the Fighting Tigers. Cortland won the opener, 15-2 in five innings, behind an 11-hit attack led by
Cailey Cuttita (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa), who homered and drove in four runs.
Cortland will host St. John Fisher on Saturday in a noon doubleheader.
GAME 1: Cortland 15, Cobleskill 2 (5 inn.)
Cortland trailed 2-0 after the top of the first inning, but answered with a run in the first, four in the second, six in the third and four in the fourth. The game was called after the top of the fifth due to the eight-run rule.
Isabel Milazzo (Elmira/Elmira Notre Dame) went the distance for the win, allowing four hits and one walk with three strikeouts in five innings. Cuttita finished 2-for-4 with a homer and four RBI,
Gina Meyers (Liverpool) went 2-for-2 with a walk, RBI and three runs, and
Jess Miller (Campbell Hall/Goshen) was 2-for-3 with an RBI double.
Also for the Red Dragons,
Taylor Felicello (Marlboro) finished 1-for-1 with three walks and three runs,
Tori Reich (Cornwall) ended 1-for-2 with a walk and two runs, and
Alyssa Finno (Hurley/Kingston) went 1-for-3 with a walk and two RBI.
Jillian Nitchman finished 2-for-2 with a double and run scored and Maya Davies was 1-for-2 with an RBI for Cobleskill, which was also opening its season.
The guests went up 2-0 in the first after Alyssa Villielm singled and eventually scored on a wild pitch, followed by a Davies RBI single. Cortland got a run back in the bottom of the inning when
Kelly O'Gorman (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) walked and moved around the bases on a wild pitch, passed ball and wild pitch.
Cortland's four-run second featured an O'Gorman sacrifice fly, with another run scoring on the play due to a throwing error. Two batters later Cuttita lined a two-run homer to left to give the Red Dragons a 5-2 lead. The Red Dragons' six-run third frame was highlighted by RBI singles by
Sabrina Caputo (Westbury/W.T. Clarke), Meyers and Felicello, a Cuttita RBI groundout, a wild pitch that scored a run, and Miller's RBI double.
The Red Dragons created the final margin with four in the fourth. Cuttita singled in a run and Szesnat plated a run with a sac fly. Finno wrapped up the inning with a two-run single.
GAME 2: Cortland 2, Cobleskill 0
Kane allowed only three hits and two walks and struck out five in seven innings in her shutout performance. She did not allow any Cobleskill players to reach second base. Victoria Decker was solid in the circle for the guests, scattering nine hits and two walks and allowing two runs in six innings.
Szesnat went 3-for-3 with a double and two RBI, Felicello was 2-for-3 with two runs, and Caputo closed the game 2-for-2 with a walk to pace Cortland's offense. Emily Lutz, Megan Gilligan and Emma Duarte each finished 1-for-2 for Cobleskill.
Cortland took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Felicello hit a one-out single, went to second on a groundout and scored on Szesnat's RBI single through the left side. A similar pattern emerged for Cortland's insurance run in the bottom of the fifth. Felicello again singled with one out, then stole second and moved to third on a groundout. Szesnat drove her home with a single down the right field line.
