Cortland Wins Two at New Paltz to Take SUNYAC East Lead

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – Karlee Weeden (Maybrook/Valley Central) allowed one run on six hits in the opener and Cortland pounded out 16 hits in the second game as the nationally 21st-ranked Red Dragons swept host New Paltz, 5-1 and 12-3, in a SUNYAC East softball doubleheader. The second game was called after five innings due to the eight-run rule.

Kelly O'Gorman (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) homered and tripled in each game for Cortland (11-5, 8-2 SUNYAC East), which moved into first place in the East division standings ahead of second-place Oneonta (6-2 division mark). Cortland is next scheduled for action on Saturday, April 24 with a 2 p.m. league doubleheader at Plattsburgh.

Cortland 5, New Paltz 1

Weeden, now 6-1 on the season, struck out six batters and didn't walk anyone over her seven innings in the circle. Her shutout bid was broken up in the bottom of the seventh on three straight two-out singles by Ashley Puig, Kelly Mamorowski and Lauren Shambo. Prior to the seventh, Weeden had allowed only four runners on three singles and a hit by pitch.

Cortland scored in the first on an O'Gorman triple and Taylor Felicello (Marlboro) RBI groundout, and added a run in the second on a one-out triple by Sabrina Caputo (Westbury/W.T. Clarke) and an RBI grounder by Tori Reich (Cornwall), with Reich safe on the play due to an error.

O'Gorman hit a solo homer in the fourth, and the Red Dragons added two insurance runs in the seventh on back-to-back sacrifice flies by Caputo and Reich.

O'Gorman and Felicello each went 2-for-3 with a walk and Lexi Szesnat (Colonie) was 1-for-3 with a walk for Cortland. Sydney Bonewit and Puig each finished 2-for-3 for New Paltz. Lindsay Roman started for the Hawks and gave up five runs on nine hits with three walks and three strikeouts in six-plus innings.

Cortland 12, New Paltz 3 (5 inn.)

O'Gorman finished a double shy of the cycle as she homered to lead off the game, singled in the second and tripled in the fourth. She struck out in the fifth and didn't get another plate appearance as Cortland's seven-run fifth inning led to an eight-run stoppage after the bottom of the inning.

Courtney Kane (Yaphank/Bellport) tossed four innings for the victory to run her record to 4-2. She allowed three runs, but only one earned, on four hits with two walks and two strikeouts in four innings. Lindsey Richards (Liverpool/Cicero-North Syracuse) pitched a scoreless fifth with one hit and one walk permitted.

In addition to O'Gorman's 3-for-4 performance, Gina Meyers (Liverpool) was 3-for-3 with two runs scored, Alyssa Finno (Hurley/Kingston) went 3-for-4 with an RBI, Szesnat ended 2-for-3 with a walk, RBI and two runs, and Cailey Cuttita (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) drove in four runs. Rhionna Bianchini was 2-for-2 for the host Hawks (1-7, 1-7 SUNYAC East).

Cortland led 2-0 in the first on O'Gorman's homer and a Caputo RBI single, and the lead grew to 3-0 in the second when Meyers led off with a single, stole second and eventually scored on a Cuttita sac fly. New Paltz plated two runs in the third on a two-out dropped fly ball, but the Red Dragons quickly responded with two in the fourth on RBI doubles from Felicello and Szesnat.

The Hawks cut the deficit to two at 5-3 in the bottom of the fourth on a Nina Simms RBI groundout. Cortland exploded for seven runs in the fifth, with most of the damage coming with two outs. The first run scored when Finno led off with a double and eventually scored from third on a Reich RBI infield single. With the bases loaded and two outs, Cuttita ripped a double to right to clear the bases and put Cortland up 9-3. Meg Peace (New Paltz/Kingston) added a two-run double two batters later, and Finno notched her second hit of the inning with an RBI single to score Peace.
