CORTLAND, N.Y. – After putting up 22 runs, including a three-home run game for
Daniel Coleman (Saratoga Springs), in a 22-1 game one victory against Oneonta, the Red Dragons could not carry the momentum into game two, losing 2-1 to snap their 13-game win streak.
Cortland (18-4, 9-1 SUNYAC East) will take on Brockport at home on Friday, April 30, in a 1 p.m. doubleheader match up that will count in the league standings, even though Brockport is part of the SUNYAC Western division.
Cortland 22, Oneonta 1
The Red Dragons' offense got off to a quick start and never let up, combining for 28 hits from 17 different players. The 28 hits are Cortland's most since a 28-hit effort at home versus Oneonta in 2015.
Coleman became the first Cortland player to hit three home runs in a game since current volunteer assistant coach
Mike Zaccardo hit three round-trippers versus Fredonia in 2007. Only four Red Dragons have accomplished the feat in the last 25 seasons – Coleman, Zaccardo, Steve Wanamaker versus Oswego in 2002, and Alex Steele versus Binghamton in 1997. Coleman hit a three-run homer in the third, a two-run shot in the sixth, and a two-run blast to the batter's eye in straightaway center in the seventh.
Ryan Flansburg (Queensbury) earned the victory with six innings of work, allowing no runs on just two hits while striking out four.
Matt Funk (Pine Plains) was the first of two relief pitchers to enter, tossing two innings and giving up one earned run on two hits and two strikeouts before turning it over to
Brad Battaglini (West Islip) to record the final three outs with one hit allowed.
Six Red Dragons recorded multiple hits. Coleman went 4-for-4 with three home runs, a hit-by-pitch and seven RBI. He drove in seven runs in a game for the second time in as many days.
Scott Giordano (Croton-On-Hudson/Croton-Harmon) also went 4-for-4 with one RBI and two runs scored.
James Varian (Hopewell Junction/Trinity-Pawling) went 3-for-3 with one RBI and three runs scored.
Paul Franzese (Somers) was 2-for-5 with a home run, three RBI and a run scored.
Matthew Krafft (Cornwall) went 2-for-4 with an RBI and one run scored, and
Chris Bonacci (Syracuse/West Genesee) went 2-for-2 off of the bench with an RBI and a run scored.
Tyler Kensey (Syracuse/West Genesee) and
Brendan May (McGraw) both recorded their first hits of the season for the Red Dragons with singles.
For Oneonta, Jake Barrett drove in a run with a two-out single in the seventh. Starter Matthew Petrossi took the loss after allowing seven hits and five runs in two and a third innings.
Oneonta 2, Cortland 1
Oneonta took an early lead in the top half of the first of the seven-inning nightcap thanks to an RBI double in the right center gap from Barrett that scored Sean McGlynn from first. Barrett also drove in Oneonta's second run in the top of the third with a two-out single to right field to score McGlynn from second.
Oneonta starter and winning pitcher Sean Liquori (4-0) shut out Cortland through five innings before allowing a run on
Mat Bruno (Rye) sac fly to score
Colin BeVard (Syracuse/West Genesee), who singled to lead off the bottom of the sixth. With runners on first and third and two out, Oneonta turned the ball over to relief pitcher Michael Losak. A wild pitch to the backstop that bounced straight back to the catcher denied Giordano from scoring from third, but allowed the runner from first to go to second. Losak was then able to record the third out on a strikeout to maintain the one-run lead.
Cortland starter
Brandon Buchan (Seaford/MacArthur) returned to the mound in the top half of the seventh and recorded the first two outs of the inning. Coming in from the bullpen,
Scott Roberts (Escondido/Del Norte) needed just one pitch to record the final out of the inning with Cortland still trailing by one.
Andrew Michalski (Buffalo/St. Francis) led off the bottom of the seventh with a walk and stole second with no outs. After Krafft bunted Michalski to third, Losak registered a strikeout for the second out. Losak walked BeVard on four pitchers, and BeVard stole second to put the potential winning run in scoring position, but Losak struck out the final batter for his fourth save of the season.
Buchan (3-2) suffered the loss, allowing two runs on six hits and two walks, while striking out a season high eight batters, in six and two thirds innings. Liquori gave up four hits and two walks and fanned five batters over five and two thirds innings.
Barrett was 2-for-3 with two RBI to lead Oneonta's offense. Coleman went 1-for-1 with a walk and hit by pitch in three plate appearances and BeVard finished 1-for-3 with a walk for Cortland.
