Cortland senior third baseman
Daniel Coleman (Saratoga Springs) has been selected as the NCAA Division III National Hitter of the Week by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) for the week ending April 25.
The award is Coleman's third of the week – he previously was named the SUNYAC Baseball Athlete of the Week and was chosen to the D3baseball.com National Team of the Week. He is the seventh Cortland player to earn an NCBWA Player of the Week honor since the organization first started presenting weekly honors on the Division III level in 2003. Other Red Dragons previously honored were hitters Jeff Flegler (2003), Steve Nickel (2010), Conrad Ziemendorf (2015) and current Cortland outfielder
Colin BeVard (2019), along with pitchers Matt Tone (2008) and Travis Ratliff (2011).
Coleman batted .727 (8-for-11) with four homers, two doubles, a walk, 14 RBI, six runs scored, a 2.000 slugging percentage and a .786 on-base percentage during a 3-1 weekend for the Red Dragons.
In a 22-1 win over Oneonta Saturday, Coleman became the first Cortland player since 2007 to hit three homers in a game and finished 4-for-4 with seven RBI. In the second game of the doubleheader, Coleman reached base in all three of his plate appearances with a single, walk and hit by pitch. The previous day in an 18-4 win over Plattsburgh, Coleman was 3-for-3 with a homer, two doubles and seven RBI.
In 22 games this spring, Coleman is batting .351 with four homers, three doubles, 22 RBI and 16 runs scored. He also sports a .979 fielding percentage with just one error in 48 total chances.
Cortland is 18-4 overall and leads the SUNYAC East with a 9-1 record. The Red Dragons are scheduled to host Brockport in a doubleheader Friday at 1 p.m. that will count in the league standings despite the fact that Brockport is in the West division.
