#17 Red Dragons Top #16 Geneseo, 14-10, in SUNYAC Semifinals

CORTLAND, N.Y. – The nationally 17th-ranked Cortland women's lacrosse team never trailed in earning a 14-10 victory versus 16th-ranked Geneseo Thursday afternoon at a rain-soaked Stadium Red in the semifinals of the SUNYAC Women's Lacrosse Tournament. The Red Dragons won their 11th straight game, improving to 11-1 on the season, and will host 14th-ranked Brockport in the championship game on Sunday at 1 p.m. with the winner earning an automatic NCAA Div. III playoff berth. The Knights dropped to 6-3 and await a possible at-large bid.

Senior Hannah Lorenzen (Stony Brook/Ward Melville), junior Hannah Keech (Penn Yan/Penn Yan Academy) and freshman Toni Cashman (East Moriches/Westhampton Beach) led Cortland with three goals each. Junior Amy Hoeffner (Bay Shore) and sophomore Kiki Meager (Syracuse/West Genesee) netted two goals apiece, junior Shelby Meduski (East Quogue/Westhampton Beach) scored a goal and senior Hannah Tiso (Somers) chipped in with an assist.

Senior goalie Paige Potter (Cortland) made six saves and collected three ground balls for the Red Dragons. Keech recorded five caused turnovers, Cashman added three ground balls and two caused turnovers and Lorenzen secured eight draw controls.

Senior Jacqui Thorsen (East Hampton) paced Geneseo's offense with three goals. Seniors Hannah Marafioti (Fairport) and Nicole Voci (Webster/Webster Thomas) each tallied two goals and one assist, while senior Megan Henderson (Cazenovia) scored two goals and freshman Emily Salanger (Syracuse/Liverpool) notched one goal.

Junior goalie Margaret Rosaschi (Highland Mills/Monroe-Woodbury) stopped six shots. Senior Caitlyn Merkel (Irondequoit) caused five turnovers, scooped up three ground balls and won three draws. Henderson finished with seven ground balls and three caused turnovers, Thorsen secured eight draws and junior Emma Gaenzle (Rochester/Brighton) collected four ground balls.

The teams traded the first four goals before Cortland used a three-goal run to build a 5-2 lead at the 16:35 mark of the first half. The Knights made it a 5-4 game, but Hoeffner and Keech closed the half with goals at 8:40 and 3:44, respectively, to give the Red Dragons a 7-4 lead at intermission.

Cashman wrapped goals around scores from Henderson and Voci to open the second half, then Lorenzen netted back-to-back goals to put Cortland ahead, 11-6, at the midway point of the period. The Knights cut into the Cortland lead with goals from Thorsen and Voci, but Hoeffner scored her second of the game at 8:48 and Meager netted her second of the game at 5:20 to give the Red Dragons a 13-8 advantage.

Thorsen notched her second goal of the game from the free position at 3:50 before Lorenzen picked up her third goal of the game at 3:09. Thorsen completed the scoring with 7.4 seconds remaining for the 14-10 final.
