Cortland Splits SUNYAC East Doubleheader vs. Visiting Oneonta

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Karlee Weeden (Maybrook/Valley Central) allowed only two hits over six scoreless innings and nationally 22nd-ranked Cortland broke open a tight game with five runs in the bottom of the sixth as the Red Dragons defeated Oneonta, 7-2, in the opening game of a SUNYAC Eastern Division doubleheader. Oneonta (1-1, 1-1 SUNYAC East), however, won the nightcap, 11-4, after scoring seven times in the top of the seventh to extend a one-run lead.

Cortland (6-2, 3-1 SUNYAC East) will host New Paltz Wednesday at 3 p.m. in a league doubleheader. The Red Dragons were originally scheduled to play at Potsdam on Saturday, but that twinbill has been postponed and Cortland will instead play a doubleheader at Oneonta Saturday.

Cortland 7, Oneonta 2

Weeden improved to 3-0 after giving up two hits and no walks and striking out four batters in six innings. Oneonta scored two unearned runs against reliever McKenna Mattison (Horseheads) in the seventh to end Cortland's streak of 21 consecutive scoreless pitching innings.

Cortland took a 1-0 lead in the second. Gina Meyers (Liverpool) doubled with two outs and Kelly O'Gorman (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) reached on an error. During the play, O'Gorman got into a long rundown between first and second, and before Oneonta eventually tagged her out Meyers easily came in to score.

The hosts tallied another unearned run in the fifth. O'Gorman got on via error and went to second on a failed pickoff attempt. She moved to third on a flyout and scored on Cailey Cuttita's (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) single. Cortland sent 10 batters to the plate in its five-run sixth. Sabrina Caputo (Westbury/W.T. Clarke) doubled, Tori Reich (Cornwall) reached on a bunt single, and Meyers singled to drive in a run. An error on the play allowed another run to score, and O'Gorman followed with an RBI double. She eventually scored on Lexi Szesnat's (Colonie) RBI single, and the final run resulted from Renee Santos' (West Haverstraw/North Rockland) pinch-hit RBI single.

Oneonta's two-run seventh started with a two-out Megan Palmatier single. An error prolonged the inning and Victoria Hines hit a two-run double to center.

Meyers and Szesnat each finished 2-for-3 with an RBI and Cuttita went 1-for-2 with two walks and an RBI to pace Cortland.

Oneonta 11, Cortland 4

Lauren Weber earned the victory for Oneonta in Game 2 after allowing five hits and no walks with three strikeouts in six innings. She gave up three runs, two earned. Courtney Kane (Yaphank/Bellport) suffered the loss after giving up three unearned runs over three innings. She gave up four hits, didn't walk anyone and struck out two. Isabel Milazzo (Elmira/Elmira Notre Dame) also tossed three innings and gave up two hits and one run with one walk. Four Cortland pitchers combined allowed only two earned runs due to six Red Dragon errors.

Oneonta scored in the first on a two-out Caroline Koch infield single, a dropped pop-up, and a Palmatier RBI single. The guests added two in the third on three consecutive Cortland errors. In the fourth, Kristen Collins was hit by a pitch and was bunted to second by Marissa Nagel. Delaney Haley bunted for a single and continued on to second and got into a rundown. Collins raced home and beat the return throw to the plate to complete the double steal and put Oneonta up 4-0.

Cortland made things interesting with three runs in the bottom of the sixth to close to within a run. O'Gorman led off with a single and scored on Taylor Felicello's (Marlboro) double to center. Cuttita singled in Felicello to make it 4-2. Pinch runner Megan LaMont (Amsterdam) went to second on a passed ball, to third on a Szesnat flyout to right, and scored on Jess Miller's (Campbell Hall/Goshen) sac fly to left.

Oneonta got its leadoff batter on in the seventh via a throwing error, but the next two batters were retired and Cortland appeared ready to escape any problems. However, the next seven Oneonta hitters reached base and seven runs crossed the plate to put the game out of reach. The big hits in the rally included a Gianna Cancelleri two-run single, a Nagel RBI single and a Anna Ciccarelli two-run double. Cortland closed the scoring on an O'Gorman RBI single in the bottom of the seventh.

Nine different players registered at least one hit for Oneonta, with Collins going 2-for-2 and Haley finishing 2-for-3 as part of 11 total hits. O'Gorman finished 2-for-4 and Alyssa Finno (Hurley/Kingston) went 1-for-2 for Cortland.
