Red Dragons Sink Lakers, 16-7, with Second-Half Surge

OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Cortland men's lacrosse team outscored Oswego, 11-4, in the second half to break open a tight game in earning a 16-7 win Friday night in SUNYAC West action. The Red Dragons evened their record at 3-3 overall and 1-1 in the conference. The Lakers fell to 0-2 overall and in the league.

Junior Dante Yacavone (Homer) matched his career high with seven points on four goals and three assists to lead the Cortland offense. Senior Zak Jones (East Quogue/Westhampton Beach), junior Troy Morris (Long Beach) and sophomore Connor Leonard (Syracuse/Henninger) each netted two goals. Freshman Colton Smith (Naples/Penn Yan Academy) recorded a season-high four points on one goal and three assists, senior Mike Nicholson (North Babylon/St. Anthony's) and junior Pat Doyen (Miller Place) tallied one goal and one assist, and seniors Brandon Stiles (Mastic/Eastport-South Manor) and Anthony LaRosa (East Meadow) and junior Tim Grosso (Hauppauge) chipped in with one goal each.

Junior goalie Marc Esposito (West Babylon) made 11 saves for he Red Dragons. Senior Brian Williams (Holtsville/Sachem East) won 14-of-20 faceoffs and collected a game-high 10 ground balls.

Weston Gray and Liam Dollard led Oswego with two goals apiece. Lucas Cioch tallied one goal and two assists, Garrett Petrelli registered one goal and one assist and Mike Fleming notched a goal.

Goalie Kevin O'Donnell turned aside 16 shots. Shane Ladd won 10 faceoffs, and Bryce Saba added three ground balls.

Cortland opened up a 3-0 lead in the first quarter as three different players scored, but the Lakers eventually made it a 5-3 game at the half and pulled to within 5-4 early in the third quarter. The Red Dragons answered by scoring nine of the next 10 goals spanning the rest of the third quarter to just before the midway point of the fourth quarter to grab a commanding 14-5 lead. The Lakers netted the next two goals, but Cortland scored the final two goals of the game for the 16-7 final.
