Danielle Bambola during Day 2 of the NCAA Championships. She's currently tied for 16th place out of 131 golfers with two rounds remaining.
EAST LANSING, MICH. – SUNY Cortland graduate student
Danielle Bambola (Miller Place) recorded an eight-over par 80 after playing her first 10 holes in even par and is currently tied for 16th place out of 131 golfers after Day 2 of the 2021 NCAA Division III Women's Golf Championships.
Bambola is one of six golfers with a two-day total of 158, 12 strokes behind the leader Makensie Toole of George Fox but only two shots out of the top 10 and only six shots shy of the top five. She will tee off in Thursday's Round 3 at 2:20 p.m.
The four-day event is being held at the Forest Akers West Golf Course on the campus of Michigan State University. After Thursday's action, the top 15 teams, out of 25, and the six best individuals not on one of those teams will advance to play in the final round Friday.
Currently, Bambola is in position to make that cut as 11 of the 15 golfers ahead of her are on teams in the top six of the standings. Carnegie Mellon leads the team standings with a 620, one stroke ahead of Methodist.
Starting the day on the back nine, Bambola bogeyed her first hole but recorded three pars, a birdie three on the 14th, then four more pars for an even-par 36. After parring the first hole to begin the front nine, Bambola stumbled with three straight bogeys and a double bogey. She finished with a par, double bogey, par and bogey for a 44.
"The golf tournament is only half over," said Cortland head coach
Mike Discenza. "She has struggled for only nine holes in a 72-hole tournament. She's tough and has the benefit of a late tee time to get herself in a good place and ready to go for the second half of the event."
