Cortland Finishes Regular Season with Non-League Split at Oswego

OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Cortland softball team closed out its regular-season schedule with a non-league split at Oswego. The Red Dragons won the first game, 5-2, but fell in the second contest, 8-6.

Cortland (17-7) will be the number one seed from the SUNYAC Eastern division and will host a best-of-three league playoff semifinal series Saturday at 11 a.m. versus the second seed from the West, which is still to be determined. Oswego, a SUNYAC West member, is now 8-12 on the spring.

Cortland 5, Oswego 2

Karlee Weeden (Maybrook/Valley Central) went the distance in the circle for the victory and is now 9-1 on the season. She allowed seven hits, which included three each in the third and sixth innings, and gave up two runs. She finished with three strikeouts and one walk. Kelly O'Gorman (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) went 2-for-3 with a triple, double, walk and two runs scored. Taylor Felicello (Marlboro) and Sabrina Caputo (Westbury/W.T. Clarke) each were 2-for-4 with an RBI.

Oswego was led by Madelana Wrubel, who finished 3-for-4 at the plate. Madison Hoeflich gave up two runs on five hits in five innings with a walk and a strikeout and took the loss.

O'Gorman tripled and scored on a Felicello single in the top of the third, and Oswego tied the game in the bottom of the inning on a Samantha Morgan single, a Hoeflich sac bunt and a Tai Smith RBI single.

Jess Miller (Campbell Hall/Goshen) led off the fourth with a double and pinch runner Megan LaMont (Amsterdam) eventually scored on a wild pitch to put the Red Dragons back on top, 2-1, and Cortland added a run in the sixth on a Caputo RBI infield single. Oswego got one run back on Fiona Higgins' RBI single in the sixth, but the Lakers eventually left the bases loaded in the inning after a foul out and a strikeout.

Cortland scored two insurance runs in the seventh. O'Gorman led off with a double and eventually scored on a Lexi Szesnat (Colonie) RBI single. Cailey Cuttita (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa), who walked prior to the Szesnat hit, scored on an error on a ball hit by Miller.

Oswego 8, Cortland 6

Cortland lost the nightcap despite O'Gorman hitting two homers, including a homer to lead off the game and a grand slam in the second that put the Red Dragons up 5-1. Oswego, however, scored six times in the bottom of the second to go up 7-5 behind the strength of two-run singles from Higgins and Taylor DuBois.

The Lakers extended the lead to 8-5 in the bottom of the sixth on a DuBois RBI single. Cortland, however, built up the drama in the top of the seventh. Szeznat led off with a homer to bring the Red Dragons back within two. With two outs, Caputo and Tori Reich (Cornwall) each singled and Megan Weber (Lockport/Starpoint) walked to load the bases, but O'Gorman flied out to right to end the game.

O'Gorman finished 2-for-5 with five RBI, Reich was 2-for-3, and Caputo and Szesnat each finished 2-for-4. Leah Czerwinski was 3-for-4 with an RBI, DuBois ended 2-for-4 with three RBI, and Higgins was 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs for Oswego.

Hoeflich earned the win in relief for the Lakers, giving up only one run in four and two thirds innings. Courtney Kane (Yaphank/Bellport) allowed seven runs, but just one earned, in an inning and two thirds. She was touched for six hits, walked three and struck out one. Lindsey Richards (Liverpool/Cicero-North Syracuse) went the final four and a third innings and allowed one run on seven hits with five strikeouts and a walk.
