Five Red Dragons Chosen to USILA All-America Team

Five members of the SUNY Cortland men's lacrosse team – junior goalie Marc Esposito (West Babylon), senior midfielder Zak Jones (East Quogue/Westhampton Beach), junior defender Dominick Natale (Homer), senior faceoff specialist Brian Williams (Holtsville/Sachem East) and junior attack Dante Yacavone (Homer) - have been recognized as Division III honorable mention All-Americans for the 2021 season by the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA).

In addition, Esposito was named a third team All-American by USA Lacrosse Magazine, while Williams was selected to the North squad for the USILA North/South Senior All-Star Game, which was held May 28 at Roger Williams University in Bristol, R.I.

Esposito started all 15 games in goals and finished the season with an 8.18 GAA, .595 save percentage and 154 total saves. He stopped 16 shots in a SUNYAC finals win over Geneseo and in a regular-season win versus Clarkson, and he made 12 saves while allowing only four goals in an NCAA first-round win over UMass Boston.

Jones registered 31 goals and 13 assists for 44 points in 15 starts. He was second on the team in goals and third in assists and total points. He tallied five goals in a win versus Oswego and scored two or more goals 11 times.

Natale played in 13 games, 12 as a starter, and was third on the team with 34 ground balls and fourth with nine caused turnovers. He helped lead a Cortland defense that allowed 8.7 goals per game, including seven or fewer goals eight times. Natale grabbed eight ground balls and caused three turnovers in Cortland's win over Geneseo in the SUNYAC finals.

Williams is an All-American for the second time; he was also honorable mention in 2019. This spring, in 15 games, he won 191-of-287 faceoffs (67 percent) and led the Red Dragons with 129 ground balls. Williams won 24-of-31 faceoffs in a regular-season win versus Geneseo, was successful 13-of-17 times in an NCAA first-round win over UMass Boston, and won 19-of-28 faceoffs in the NCAA second round against eventual national champion RIT.

Yacavone led Cortland with 41 goals, 24 assists and 65 total points in 15 starts, and also added 28 ground balls. He registered six goals and three assists in a home win versus Oswego, scored six times in the SUNYAC semifinals versus Potsdam, and had four goals and three assists in an NCAA first-round win over UMass Boston.

Cortland finished the season with an 11-4 record. The Red Dragons won the SUNYAC title and advanced to the NCAA second round to tie for ninth place nationally.
