Newcomers Help Cortland Finish Sixth at Competitive Hamilton Invitational

NEW HARTFORD, N.Y. – Freshmen earned three of Cortland's top four finishes to help lead the Red Dragon women's golf team to a sixth-place finish out of 15 schools at the Hamilton College Invitational. The two-day event was held at the Yahnundasis Golf Club. 
 
Cortland scored a 332 on Saturday and a 325 Sunday for a final score of 657. The field included a number of nationally and regionally strong programs. Nationally fifth-ranked Williams College won the team title with a 613 (313-300), followed by 23rd-ranked Amherst College at 623 (316-307) and 21st-ranked NYU in third at 628 (319-309). The host school was fourth at 633 (318-315) and Middlebury College was fifth at 637 (318-319). Cortland's 657 score was 43 ahead of seventh-place Ithaca and 46 better than eighth-place Union. 
 
Freshmen Paige Cerminaro (Howell, NJ) and Sophie Oristian (Gaithersburg, MD/Quince Orchard) tied for 22nd place in the 88-golfer field with two-day scores of 163. Cerminaro had a 78 on the par-73 course Saturday and an 85 Sunday, while Oristian was the opposite of that with an 85 Saturday and a 78 Sunday. 
 
Freshman Claudia Winterberg (Harrisburg, NC/Hickory Ridge) and senior Amanda Gaffney (Williamsville/Williamsville East) were part of a three-way tie for 28th place at 166. They both opened with an 85 followed by an 81. Junior Alivia Waldron (Saranac) tied for 34th place with a 170 (84-86) and sophomore Kristina Visniesky (Buffalo/Orchard Park), as an individual entry, placed 54th with a 183 (90-93). 
 
Gihoe Seo of Amherst was tournament medalist with a one-over par 147 (73-74), five strokes better than Middlebury's Katie Murphy (78-74-152). 
 
Oristian and Winterberg each recorded an eagle three on the par-5 eighth hole during Sunday's round. Winterberg also notched two birdies Sunday, as well as one on Saturday, and Oristian had one birdie during her opening round. 
 
Cerminaro birdied three holes Saturday and one Sunday, while Gaffney had three birdies during Sunday's round and one on Saturday. Waldron tallied one birdie each day. 
 
Cortland and Ithaca will co-host the Cortaca Northeast Invitational Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 25-26. The first round is scheduled for the Ithaca Country Club and the second round at the Cortland Country Club.
