#24 Red Dragons Defeat Hobart, 2-1, on "Blake"away Goal

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Graduate student Blake Aronson (Huntington Station/Walt Whitman) scored on a breakaway to snap a second-half tie as the nationally 24th-ranked Cortland men's soccer team defeated Hobart College, 2-1, Wednesday night in non-conference action at Holloway Field.

Senior Anthony Ruggiero (Holtsville/Sachem East) added a goal an assist, and graduate student Scott Cebollero (Commack) and sophomore Jack Coleman (Endwell/Maine-Endwell) each chipped in with an assist for the Red Dragons (4-1-1). Junior goalie Braden Melveney (Syracuse/Cicero-North Syracuse) turned aside six shots.

Sophomore Matias Valenzuela Matic (Santiago, Chile/Northwood School) scored the Statesmen's goal with senior Landon DeCesare-Fousek (Lincoln, MA/Lincoln-Sudbury) picking up an assist. Sophomore goalie Christian Burkhart (Rochester/Brighton) made five saves for Hobart (3-2).

Ruggiero gave Cortland a 1-0 lead with his first goal of the season in the 14th minute, running onto a through ball from Coleman and beating Burkhart one-on-one. Matic tied the game in the 29th minute. DeCesare-Fousek sent a corner kick to the far side of the box where Matic gathered the ball and curled a shot into the upper right corner.

Ruggiero nearly gave the Red Dragons the lead back in the 59th minute, but Burkhart made a sprawling save on his uncontested bid from the left side of the box. In the 66th minute, Aronson netted what proved to be the game winner. Cebollero struck a long free kick from Cortland's defensive third. Ruggiero flicked the ball ahead and Aronson broke free through the Hobart defense and finished off the play for his fourth goal of the season.

Hobart turned up the pressure in the closing minutes, but the Cortland defense held the Statesmen without a quality chance to secure the 2-1 victory.
