Cortland Closes Perfect Weekend with Sweeps of Skidmore and Union

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Cortland women's volleyball team completed a perfect weekend trip to the Capital District with sweeps of Skidmore and host Union. The Red Dragons, coming off a victory at Russell Sage on Friday evening, defeated Skidmore, 25-14, 25-15, 25-23 and Union, 25-14, 25-16, 25-15, to improve to 9-2 on the season.
 
Hannah Southcott (Princeton, WV) and Nicole Van Pelt (Montgomery/Valley Central) led Cortland versus Skidmore with 12 and 11 kills, respectively. Southcott finished with a .333 attack percentage (two errors in 30 attempts) and Van Pelt hit at a .318 clip (four errors in 22 attempts).
 
Ryan Hinshaw (Aurora, IL/Joliet Catholic Academy) paced the Red Dragons with 20 assists and Megan McMahon (Ballston Spa) had 10 assists. Carly Haegele (Commack) led the team with three aces and 15 digs, with Southcott and Van Pelt each serving two aces. Olivia Doorley (Pearl River) added seven digs and Camryn Anderson (Bronx/Cardinal Spellman) finished with six blocks, two solo.
 
Zoe Beals led Skidmore (4-7) with 10 kills and Audrey Powell had 27 assists.
 
After winning the first two sets with relative ease, the Red Dragons appeared to be on the way to another quick victory with a 19-10 lead in the third. Skidmore, however, scored eight of the next nine points to close within 20-18, and eventually was down only 22-21 after back-to-back aces by Grace Aronson. Southcott, however, registered kills for the next two points, and after Skidmore fought off two match points, Maya Owens (Nyack) closed the match with a kill.
 
In the win over Union, Van Pelt finished with 14 kills, Caterina Mangogna (Manorville/Eastport-South Manor) had eight kills and a .312 attack percentage, and Alexa Guedez (Rye/Rye Neck) had seven kills with no errors in 10 attempts for a .700 attack percentage. Southcott totaled six kills, while Owens put down five kills with no errors in 13 attempts (.385).
 
McMahon and Hinshaw shared the team lead with 17 assists apiece. Haegele notched team highs of 17 digs and three aces, and Doorley and McMahon each had six digs. Owens and Danielle Fisk (Honeoye Falls/Honeoye Falls-Lima) recorded three blocks each.
 
For Union (3-8), Morgan Bohlke had seven kills, Brooke Fleming handed out 18 assists, and Meredith Blinn had 13 digs.
 
Cortland was in control most of the match, leading 15-8 and 19-10 in the first set, 14-7 and 18-10 in the second set, and 11-3 and 16-8 in the third set.
 
Cortland returns to SUNYAC play next weekend with matches Friday at Buffalo State and Saturday at Fredonia.
