CORTLAND, N.Y. – The nationally 20th-ranked Cortland field hockey team opened up a quick 2-0 lead and went on to defeat Oneonta, 3-1,Wednesday evening in the SUNYAC opening game for both teams. The host Red Dragons ran their record to 7-0, while the visiting Red Dragons dropped to 1-5.

Keirra Ettere (Mahopac/Lakeland) recorded an assist for Cortland. Senior goalie
Megan McGuinness (Carle Place) stopped four shots.
Sophomore Michaela Maniscalco (Northport) notched hr first goal of the season for Oneonta. Freshman Emilia Montgomery (Simsbury, CT) assisted on the goal. Senior goalie Kristy Campana (Melville/Walt Whitman) turned aside nine shots, and junior Carly Waszczak (Northport) registered two defensive saves.
Fox gave Cortland the lead just 41 seconds into the game, lifting a shot over Campana from the left side after a penalty corner. Fox then made it a 2-0 score at the 4:01 mark, putting a shot inside the left post after a long carry and cutting into the circle. Fox had her bid for a hat trick denied 4:27 into the second quarter when Waszczak turned aside her shot at the goal line.
Waszczak again kept the game at 2-0, preventing a shot from Cortland senior
Madison Becker (Moravia) from scoring 8:59 into the third quarter. Corrigan netted her sixth goal of the season with a long blast inside the left post 1:42 into the fourth quarter to put the host Red Dragons ahead, 3-0. Oneonta, however, spoiled the shutout bid with 3.5 seconds remaining when Maniscalco converted a reverse-stick shot through traffic after an Oneonta penalty corner.
