FREDONIA, N.Y. – Cortland overcame an early deficit in the first set and dominated the second and fourth sets in a 3-1 SUNYAC women's volleyball victory at Fredonia.
The Red Dragons, winners of six straight matches, are now 11-2 overall and 3-0 in conference play. Fredonia suffered its first league loss of the season and dropped to 6-8 overall and 2-1 in the SUNYAC.
Hannah Southcott (Princeton, WV) finished with 17 kills and only one error in 36 attempts for a .444 attack percentage. She also recorded nine digs.
Nicole Van Pelt (Montgomery/Valley Central) had 12 kills and nine digs,
Maya Owens (Nyack) rang up six kills and six digs, and
Danielle Fisk (Honeoye Falls/Honeoye Falls-Lima) finished with five kills, four digs and a team-high three aces.
Alexa Guedez (Rye/Rye Neck) had a team-best seven blocks, six of them solo, and also put down four kills in 10 attempts with no errors.
Ryan Hinshaw (Aurora, IL/Joliet Catholic Academy) led the Red Dragons with 18 assists, followed by
Megan McMahon (Ballston Spa) with 13 assists, and
Carly Haegele (Commack) paced the team with 22 digs.
Fredonia was led by Emily Jones with 11 kills, Kourtney Krchniak with 20 assists and nine digs, and Brinn Shaughnessy with 16 digs and five kills.
Cortland fell behind 11-5 in the first set but scored six straight to tie the score at 11-11. Fisk had two aces during that run. The Red Dragons were clinging to a 17-16 lead before using a Fisk kill and a Fredonia ball handling error to take a 19-16 lead. The Blue Devils closed to within 20-19 before a Guedez block and two Fredonia misplays made it 23-19. The hosts got back as close as 24-22 before Southcott's kill ended the set.
The Red Dragons took an early 8-3 lead in the second set and later went on a 6-0 run, including two Southcott kills, to extend a 13-8 lead to 19-8. Southcott finished the set with six kills and no errors in 11 attempts. The third set was tied at 18 before Fredonia took control with four consecutive points, two on Shaughnessy aces, and the Blue Devils led by at least two the rest of the way. Southcott was solid again in the third set with seven kills and no errors in 12 attempts.
Cortland regrouped in the fourth set and fashioned a 13-1 run that changed a 9-8 lead into a 22-9 gap and an easy victory. Guedez registered four of her blocks (three solo) during the set.
Cortland finished with a .209 team attack percentage while limiting Fredonia to a .019 mark.
The Red Dragons will continue SUNYAC play with home matches this Friday evening versus 2019 league champion Brockport and Saturday afternoon against league runner-up Geneseo.
