CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Cortland women's volleyball team picked up its first two victories of the season, sweeping both Arcadia and St. Lawrence during the opening day of the Cortland Red Dragon Classic.
Cortland (2-1) will finish the tournament with a match against Nazareth 2 p.m. Saturday. The tournament is a pared-down version of previous Red Dragon Classics, with just six schools competing – some with four matches, some with three, and one school, Utica, with just one.
Nicole Van Pelt (Montgomery/Valley Central) led Cortland in its 25-17, 25-18, 25-19 win over Arcadia with 13 kills and three aces. She finished with a .333 attack percentage.
Hannah Southcott (Princeton, WV) added 11 kills and 10 digs and also had a .333 hitting percentage, while
Alexa Guedez (Rye/Rye Neck) totaled six kills and no errors in 10 attempts for a .600 attack percentage.
Ryan Hinshaw (Aurora, IL/Joliet Catholic) finished with 17 assists and six digs and
Carly Haegele (Commack) paced the team with 16 digs.
Camryn Anderson (Bronx/Cardinal Spellman) paced Cortland with five blocks. Cortland finished the match with a .282 team attack percentage and nine blocks.
Arcadia, currently 1-2 after rallying for a five-set win over Fredonia to close out Friday's action, was led versus Cortland by Michelle Frank's 10 kills and Estefania Martinez-Sola's 28 assists and 13 digs.
In the Red Dragons' 25-19, 25-19, 25-13 win over St. Lawrence, Southcott rang up 14 kills and six digs, Van Pelt had 12 kills and five digs, and
Maya Owens (Nyack) put down six kills with no errors in 16 attempts.
Megan McMahon (Ballston Spa) and
Meadow Wittman (Colden/Springville Griffith Institute) finished with 19 and 18 assists, respectively, Haegele added three aces and 16 digs, and Anderson and Guedez shared the team lead with three blocks each. Cortland hit .286 as a team.
Natalie Piper led St. Lawrence (0-2) with 18 kills and 13 digs. Dorian Funk dished out 17 assists and Allie Posnick added 14 assists.
