Red Dragons Play to 0-0 Tie vs. Stevens

CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Cortland and Stevens men's soccer teams played to a 0-0 double-overtime tie Saturday afternoon at Holloway Field. The Red Dragons record stands at 0-1-1 following the game, while the Ducks are now 0-0-1.

Junior goalie Braden Melveney (Syracuse/Cicero-North Syracuse) registered four saves for Cortland, and senior goalie Aedan Boriotti (Sea Girt, NJ/CBA) stopped seven shots for Stevens. Each team recorded a team save.

Both teams generated several quality chances in the game. Cortland's two best opportunities in the first half came in the 13th and 41st minutes. Boriotti made a save on sophomore Jack Coleman's (Endwell/Maine-Endwell) bending left-footed shot, and Stevens graduate student Tyler Dressman (Durham, NC/Charles E. Jordan) cleared senior Ian Blugh's (Staten Island/Curtis) header away at the right post.

The Ducks had back-to-back chances in the 25th minute. Senior Sean Masur (Bridgewater, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan) had his one-time 12-yard shot denied by Cortland graduate student Scott Cebollero (Commack), and then Masur's follow up rebound was blocked.

Stevens threatened first in the second half. In the 54th minute, Melveney made a save on graduate student Cristiano Hocken's (New Providence, NJ) header from 10 yards out. Four minutes later, Boriotti stopped Coleman's header deep in the box. Moments later, Melveney denied a bid from junior Bruno Andino (North Brunswick, NJ), punching his shot over the crossbar. In the 69th minute, Coleman crated another good chance, but his header just went over the crossbar. Stevens had a final chance to win the game in regulation. With one minute remaining, junior Jay Poskitt (Winchester) was open in the box, but Melveney made a diving save to keep the game scoreless.

The best chance for either team in the two extra sessions came from Cortland. With just under two minutes remaining in the second overtime, junior Mike Hunsucker (Smithtown/Smithtown West) struck a one-time shot from 25 yards out that Boriotti saved. Stevens generated some threats but several dangerous crosses could not be finished off with any shots on Melveney.
