Cortland Finishes Second at St. Lawrence Invitational with Record-Setting Scores

Alivia Waldron tied for sixth place with a 152, including a career-best 75 on Saturday
CANTON, N.Y. – The Cortland women's golf team broke single-day and two-day school scoring records and finished in second place out of six teams at the season-opening St. Lawrence Invitational Saturday and Sunday at the Oliver D. Appleton Golf Course. The Red Dragons posted scores of 311 on Saturday and 312 on Sunday for a final score of 623. The previous school marks of 314 and 633 also were set at the St. Lawrence Invitational in the fall of 2019. 
 
Nationally 21st-ranked NYU won the team title with a two-day score of 571 (281-290), followed by Cortland, Ithaca (321-307-628), Union (325-319-644), William Smith (344-329-673) and St. Lawrence (380-374-754) in the six-team field. 
 
Junior Alivia Waldron (Saranac) tied for sixth place out of 32 golfers with a two-day score of 152. She posted a career-best 75 Saturday, followed by a 77 Sunday. Freshman Paige Cerminaro (Howell, NJ) finished eighth with a 153 (78-75) and freshman Claudia Winterberg (Harrisburg, NC/Hickory Ridge) was ninth with a 154 (75-79). 
 
Also for the Red Dragons, freshman Sophie Oristian (Gaithersburg, MD/Quince Orchard) tied for 17th place with a 164 (83-81) and sophomore Rachel Curatolo (Poughkeepsie/Spackenkill) tied for 22nd with a 172, including a career-best 85 on Saturday. 
 
NYU golfers claimed the top five places, led by Madison Phung (69-73) and Michelle Zhou (71-71) tied for first with a two-under par scores of 142, and Nalinda Wanikpun (70-73) third at 143. 
 
Waldron finished the tournament with six birdies, three each day, and 18 pars over 36 holes. Cerminaro posted two birdies and 10 pars Saturday and one birdie and 13 pars Sunday. Winterberg's opening round featured a two-under par 34 on the back nine, including birdies on five of the last eight holes. She also birdied three holes Sunday. Oristian registered nine pars Saturday and eight pars and a birdie Sunday, while Curatolo birdied a hole each day and had a total of 15 pars during the tournament. 
 
Cortland returns to action next Saturday and Sunday at the Hamilton College Invitational in New Hartford.
