Red Dragons Fall in Home Opener to Ithaca, 2-0

CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Ithaca women's soccer team scored two first-half goals and went on to defeat Cortland, 2-0, in non-conference action Wednesday night at Holloway Field in a game delayed 90 minutes due to inclement weather. The Red Dragons fell to 1-2, while the Bombers improved to 3-0.

Junior goalie Kiersten Becker (Guilderland) turned aside six shots for Cortland with all of the saves coming in the second half. Sophomore goalie Claire Reader (Newark, DE/Newark Charter School) registered five saves in posting the shutout for Ithaca.

Junior Delaney Rutan (Pitcher/Cincinnatus) and sophomore Rosie Bostian (Yardley, PA/Pennsbury) each netted a goal for Ithaca. Graduate student Alex Epifani (DeWitt/Jamesville-DeWitt) assisted on both goals.

The Red Dragons had two excellent chances to get on the scoreboard first early in the first half. In the third minute, senior Jaden Galluzzo (Commack) broke free into the box, but her 10-yard shot slid wide of the left post. Two minutes later, sophomore Simone Neivel (Syracuse/C.W. Baker) had an open shot from the right side of the box denied by Reader with a diving save.

Rutan scored the game-winning goal in the 17th minute, depositing a shot inside the left post from the right side of the box. Bostian made it a 2-0 game in the 25th minute with a goal almost identical to Rutan's effort.

The Bombers nearly added an early goal in the second half, but Becker came up big with a save on Rutan's initial shot and a diving save at the left post on Bostian's follow-up shot all alone inside the six-yard box. Moments later, Reader made a diving save at the left post on Galluzzo's bid, knocking the ball over the end line. Cortland generated one more quality chance, but junior Lizzy Sabatelle (Poughkeepsie/Roy C. Ketcham) one-touched a loose ball after a free kick just wide of the left post in the 70th minute.
