Red Dragons Drop 59-58 Thriller at Brockport

BROCKPORT, N.Y. – David Grady III hit what proved to be the winning layup with 1:19 remaining and Brockport held Cortland scoreless over the game's final four minutes as the Golden Eagles nipped the visiting Red Dragons, 59-58, in a SUNYAC men's basketball game.

Austin Grunder (Trumansburg/Charles O. Dickerson) led Cortland (7-7, 3-4 SUNYAC) with 17 points, 12 rebounds and four steals and he added two assists. He was 8-for-15 from the field. Kareem Lubin (South Blooming Grove/Washingtonville) scored 15 points, shared the team lead with 12 rebounds, dished out two assists and led the team with three blocked shots. Humberto Cabrera (Millbrook) added 10 points, three rebounds and two assists, AJ Lawton (Saratoga Springs) made three 3-pointers for nine points, and Riley McEvoy (Homer) chipped in with four points, four rebounds and a team-best three assists.

Mekhi Beckett scored 19 points and pulled down seven rebounds for Brockport (10-4, 5-3 SUNYAC). He hit 8-of-12 shots, including 3-of-5 from 3-point range. Grady finished with 14 points and six boards, Jahidi Wallace scored 13 points and led the team with eight rebounds, and Devante Hagins posted totals of five points, four assists, seven rebounds and three steals.

Brockport shot 41 percent from the field overall and made 7-of-20 attempts (35 percent) from the 3-point line. Cortland shot 35 percent overall and 24 percent (8-of-33) from deep.

The game featured 12 ties and 10 lead changes, and neither team led by more than six points. Brockport led 29-25 at halftime, but Cortland took a 39-37 advantage on a Cabrera 3-pointer with 13:59 remaining. The Red Dragons didn't trail from that point until Beckett hit a jumper with 4:32 left to give the hosts a 57-55 lead.

Cortland regained the lead at 58-57 with 4:16 left on a Danny Linehan (Blauvelt/Tappan Zee) 3-pointer for what ended up being the Red Dragons' final points of the afternoon. Grady scored the decisive layup with 1:19 left after gathering in an inbounds lob pass from the baseline.

Cortland missed a 3-pointer with 38 seconds left, but Linehan's steal gave the Red Dragons possession with less than 25 seconds on the clock. Following a timeout, Cortland worked most of the clock before missing a jumper from the left side. Brockport grabbed the rebound and was fouled with three seconds left, but the Golden Eagles missed the front end of a 1-and-1. Cortland called timeout with 2.5 seconds remaining, then another timeout, but after that was only able to get off a shot near halfcourt that missed the mark at the buzzer.

Cortland will host Oswego Saturday at 4 p.m.
