Lazarus Morgan, Cortland's football defensive coordinator since the spring of 2020, has accepted the head coaching position at Buffalo State.
Morgan, in his first season on the field with the Red Dragons in the fall of 2021, guided a defensive unit that ranked fourth nationally in Division III in scoring defense (10.5 points/game) and fifth in total defense (213.8 yards/game). Cortland registered five defensive touchdowns, including a school record-tying four interception returns for scores. Cortland finished the season 11-1, including 10-0 in the regular season, won the Empire 8 title, and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division III playoffs.
"My time at Cortland was special; the 116 is a team I will never forget," Morgan said. "I am very thankful for the relationships I formed here at Cortland with members of the administration and the athletic department, as well as the Cortland Football Family. The future of the football program is in great hands for years to come."
"One of my priorities as a head coach is to fill our coaching staff with assistant coaches that possess the aspiration, drive, and talent to one day become a head coach of their own," noted Cortland head coach
Curt Fitzpatrick. "It was only a matter of time before Coach Morgan found the right opportunity for him and his family. He is a talented coach and a terrific leader. On behalf of the entire SUNY Cortland program, I want to thank Laz for his hard work and dedication to our team and our players. The 2021 season is one that we will always cherish, and he was a big part of our success. I wish him the best of luck in his journey at Buffalo State.

"With that being said, I am excited to begin the search for a new defensive coordinator who will undoubtedly possess similar talent and characteristics. The future of Red Dragon football is bright."
